ReadyNas Ultra 6 Plus? Wait for the next one?

I have been looking into buying a NAS with 6 bays and is expandable. It looks like the ReadyNas Ultra 6 Plus is a bit dated with a E2160 CPU. I have also read that the pro series has been added to the EOL list (not sure about the Ultra Plus series).

My question is to wait for a newer version to be released by Netgear, if so, how much longer? Or just buy it now if there is nothing on the horizon, which currently the wattage/performance is a bit low.
I don't want to spend close to a grand, and find out 2 months later that for the same price, I could have bought a Sandybridge powered ReadyNas capable of transcoding 1080p -_-...

Edit: In Australia, they are offering a $100 visa card for buyers of the Ultra 6 Plus. This might mean they want to get rid of stock to make way for new models?

Re: ReadyNas Ultra 6 Plus? Wait for the next one?

The Pro 6 has the E5300 2.6Ghz CPU. Some of the newer Ultra 6 Plus units have E5300 CPUs but there's no guarantee you'd get that if you were to purchase one (some U6Ps may have been sitting on a shelf somewhere for a long time).

Where did you read about the Pro Series being added to the EOL list? The Pro Series is not EOL. Perhaps you're thinking of the first gen Pro Business Edition/Pioneer Edition or the Ultra 6 Plus (second gen Pioneer).

The first gen Pro was released late 2008. Second gen late 2010. We'll have to wait and see when NetGear next updates the line. If you need it now, I'd recommend buying now. The Pro 6 is very fast.

Re: ReadyNas Ultra 6 Plus? Wait for the next one?

Thanks for your quick reply! 😞 Unfortunately, I can't budget for the Pro 6, only enough for a Ultra 6 Plus.

Well, I'm going to order a Ultra 6 Plus and test my luck... Hope it's a E5300.

If you know... Whats the power consumption like while idle with 6 drives?

About the EOL 🙂 I seem to had been reading the "replaced by" column... http://www.netgear.com/landing/en-us/eolbulletin.aspx

Typical power consumption (I guess that's not at idle, but not sure) is shown here: Comparison Charts

Using things like disk spin-down, the power off/on timer etc. you can minimise power usage.

Re: ReadyNas Ultra 6 Plus? Wait for the next one?

Thanks. 1 last question;

Whats the difference between RNDP600U and RNDU6000? Which one should I get if they are the same price?

When I load up Netgear's page, it says the RNDP600U has been replaced by the RNDU6000, which was in transition into the Pro 6 ???

Re: ReadyNas Ultra 6 Plus? Wait for the next one?

RNDP600U is Ultra 6 Plus. RNDU6000 is Ultra 6. Ultra 6 Plus CPU is much faster than the Atom in the Ultra 6. See CPU Specs of the ReadyNAS

If price is the same definitely go with the Ultra 6 Plus (RNDP600U).

Thanks for all your help. I have ordered a RNDP600U. Can't wait for it to arrive! So glad I didn't buy a Drobo
