BLUF: Purchased 2 new WD Red 3tb Drives (WD30EFRX) to add to my existing 3x 1tb Drives. Which drive do I remove and in which order? Add the 4th and wait add and remove?
So that Bottom Line up Front should give you an idea of what im asking, I did some searches on how to add drives or replace drives, but since I only have 3 drives in my 104 I just want to make sure Im doing it correctly.
I purchased this ReadyNAS to get some data redundancy on my network (media etc), so I am using my old workstation drives in the NAS (I know bad idea, but I already built the array before researching).
Here are the drives and their SMART specs:

Let me know team!
I appreciate the asistance.

Re: Readynas 104 - Drive replacement / drive addition
Hello ShoGinn,
What is the firmware version of your ReadyNAS 104? This logs you sent appears to be the same with OS4 (legacy NAS) smart logs.
Are you trying to replace 2 of the 3 old disks with the 2 new disks? If so, this is a bit complicated but can be done, you just might encounter error while doing the expansion because you will do the horizontal and vertical expansion.
This might help you understand: How can I expand the storage capacity of an existing volume on my ReadyNAS OS 6 storage system?

Re: Readynas 104 - Drive replacement / drive addition
I am using the latest firmware 6.4.2
The interface does not allow an easy pull of SMART info so I just did an SSH and smartctl -I the drives...
Maybe I just didnt dig around in the interface well enough?
Can you enlighten me on how to get these logs without SSH?
----
My goal is to install 2 drives; this will mean removing one drive (so I have a total of 4 drives installed)

Re: Readynas 104 - Drive replacement / drive addition
Hello ShoGinn,
I see, now I understand why 🙂
Here's an article how to get to the smart logs: ReadyNAS: Reallocated sector errors increasing on disk(s)

If you can backup the data, please do so you can factory reset the NAS with all the disks that you want to use, tht will allow you to create a new volume then you can restore the data. That way much better than doing that volume expansion you are planning.

Re: Readynas 104 - Drive replacement / drive addition
I guess that is counter-intuitive to the X-Raid mindset?
I thought that the whole point of this sytem is so I can install a new drive and it will expand the volume?

Re: Readynas 104 - Drive replacement / drive addition
Hello ShoGinn,
The steps for horizontal and vertical expansion are for XRAID. I was just suggesting the backup and reset so it's faster and less complicated.

Re: Readynas 104 - Drive replacement / drive addition
Excellent suggestion 😉
Now which drive should I remove from my pool?
None of them have sector errors and only one is slightly older than the rest.
Is the Black drive my worst case in this device?

Re: Readynas 104 - Drive replacement / drive addition
Hello ShoGinn,
Reallocated Sector and Current Pending errors are the ones you need to check in the smart logs, it is also important to look at the ATA errors of the disks. Based on the logs you sent, all three disks are good though I haven't seen the ATA errors.
If you are to follow the volume expansion steps, I think it is better to do the vertical expansion first, that means replacing one of the 3 1TB disks with 3TB disk which will give you 2x1TB and 1x3TB then once it is done synching, add the last 3TB disk as the 4th disk (horizontal expansion).
I'd say still, backup the data, we always strongly recommend to always have full backup of the data 😉
