I purchased a ReadyNAS NV+ in 2009 which has been my main backup system until very recently. It started giving signs of power supply frailty so I have just installed a bigger better faster NAS and was about to do a staged transfer of all the non-regular backup data across to it. Of course the inevitable happened and the PSU blew up with a very audible bang tonight before I had managed to copy very much at all.
I actually can't find my model on the Netgear site: the plate on the rear says very clearly "ReadyNAS RND4000 v3"; I bought the chassis and supplied my own disks. I'd like to get the data off these disks if possible, there are some precious things in there like family albums and a video of my son's funeral that I'd be very upset to lose. I used the proprietary data striping that means I can't just mount the disk drives iin another system. Got to be this one (and hoping that the PSU didn't destroy anything else when it blew).
Regardless of the model number this unit is out of warranty by some years. Does anybody sell a suitable replacement power supply? The Netgear support site doesn't make it very easy to find out if it's possible for me to obtain one from them.

If you are getting rid of the NV+ after you migrate the data, pretty much any ATX supply (with an extender cable) will do, since it doesn't need to fit inside the case.

I've just looked at the Evercase option but I could hardly be further away (I'm in NZ, they're in the UK). Given that tonight's explosion might have done more serious damage than simply wiping out the PSU I'm loth to buy an expensive lookalike from far far away if there is a cheaper local option. That other thread may have saved me a lot of money 🙂
Hi. I have been using NV+'s for a looong time - the first one I got was back in the pre-Netgear days of Infrant. I have owned and/or put into service about a dozen of them over the years. In addition to lots of more recent Netgerar NAS's of varius makes and models, I still have 2 NV+'s that are running continuously as well as a spare one that works.

I have had to replace several NV+power supplies over the years. As you already know, replacements are no longer available form Netgear and have been considered an obsolete part for a long long time.
And I have occaisionally found replacement NV+ power supplies available for sale on ebay & Amazon, aftermarket jobs, but often costing, like $200, rediculously expensive. I have even bought a couple when available - but I have also BUILT a couple of replacement NV+ power supplies as well...
It turns out that the NV+ power supply is EXTREMELY similar to a standard ITX (small form factor) computer power supply. A decent ITX cost about $30.
An ITX supply can be made to work without too much work - but for a couple of minor changes: most importantly, the NV+ power connector is a standard ATX-style 20 pin socket. But while the NV+ power connection MOSTLY uses the standard ITX pinouts, there are a couple of important changes that must be made to use an ITX supply in an NV+.
Mods:
Firstly, ITX PSU's will have plug connectors for drives and peripherals, the unneeded ones can be lopped off and taped... Secondly, there are 3 wires in the PSU's ATX power plug on that need to be either removed (1) or changed (2).
Second, while the ITX power suppy has the same form factor (the dimensions match exactly), the fan on the new ITX supply is offset by and inch or so. So to fit it into the chassis of the NV+ you need to cut off a small piece of the bottom tray to accomdate the ITX's fan opening. It's just a small piece of sheet metal.
That's about it - otherwise the screw holes line up and everything fits perfectly... and off you go again.
While this sounds like a lot of work, it will give your NV+ an new lease on life. A competent computer handyman who knows how to use the tools of the trade can easily accomplish this repair in an hour or so.
Sounds like a good summary. I'd add that if you are planning to retire the ReadyNAS after you get the data off, you can use pretty much any ATX supply with a 20-pin extender (doing the pinout mod on the extender). Just keep the supply outside the case.
Yes, I agree. I too have a "NV+ adapter" made from a 6-inch (15 CM) ATX extension cable. This tool provides an efficient way to re-establish emergency operation. Its also a quick way to test and find out if there's more wrong than just the PSU - if the adapter / ATX PSU combo still won't start up your good ol' NV+ there's not much point in going further. At that point I'd declare an ailing NV+ dead and reach for my working spare to do data recovery if needed...
In electronic terms, any working NV+ is very, very old. Please plan accordingly.
But yep, if the PSU is all that's wrong, & when an NV+ PSU bites the dust, using the adapter you can quickly and [fairly] easily plug in pretty much any ATX PSU & see if it will get the NV+ started up... this will require running the NV+ with its case open and its cooling fan / back plate assembly detached. An emergency data recovery mission only.
The ITX supply I modified didn't need the tray modification, so I guess that depends either on the supply manufacturer or on the ReadyNAS model. Mine was for an NVX. Since the orignal Infrant units had the power supply fan, the NVX may have been orignally designed to accept it.
Here is an important thing that I wish I could add to my previous post on the conversion, but that thjread is now closed. Do not get a supply that has two 12V rails. The two should never be ganged together, and you want all the juice in the one that's connected both because you need it to spin up 4 drives and because running one with no load can create regulation issues with the other busses.
The small fan on a standard ITX supply can be annoying because its small size results in a high pitch. But it's best not to disconnect it. I see that the UK supplier has moved to one that has the fan on the other end, which probably reduces the noise. I could only find one supplier making an ITX supply with the fan on that end, and it was much more expensive than others.
The PSU pin-out document does not seem to be at that link anymore. Does anyone have a copy? My NV+ died and I want to rig a temporary PSU to pull my data.
