Will Not Buy a ReadyNAS ever again

It's not because of the hardware. The hardware in its basic form works.

It's because of the COMPLETE LACK OF APPS. If all I wanted was a cage for drives, I'd buy an ESATA frame. I bought a ReadyNAS with a CPU so it could run network apps. And there simply aren't any for the Duo. And there's no way I'm going to upgrade to only have NETGEAR release a replacement for my upgrade and see yet another product collect dust with no apps. Just a word of warning to people considering the ReadyNAS line. Don't expect apps.

I'm with you on this issue, but it would be helpful to better understand what apps you would like to see?

Re: Will Not Buy a ReadyNAS ever again

Somehow i also believe that this was my first and last netgear ready nas, hardware feels solid but software wise the readynas remote for ios is slow, lately i cant see the shares at all. In other words yo have to be a computer geek to set it up with endless usernames and passwords and not to mention that most files are not supported by the app so i cant download anything and open it. I have to use third party apps to view certain types of files. The worst one is that i cant transfer a single file from one nas to a pc, i have to create a backup and backup the whole share, unless i download it which takes a lot of time. Oh, one last thing, why are "folders" called shares??

Software needs to be more user friendly, not everyone is a computer expert.

With OS6 these two have been changed to be more how you would like them.

You can view your shares and grab a single file.

There is still a shares section, but under this there is the option to create Folders and (iSCSI) LUNs.

We believe with simple setup via ReadyCloud our NAS units are now more user friendly than they have ever been.

Re: Will Not Buy a ReadyNAS ever again

Stop me, if I'm wrong but 4.x and 5.x are, like OS6, fully fledge Debians, aren't they ? So what is the problem with apps ? you should be able to SSH and install them yourself. Of course depending on what you do Netgear has the right to deny support but if you need those apps they surely can be installed somehow.
Can you tell us what you miss ? I think priori to OS6 community repositories took a great part in apps management, did you stick to netgear environment or did you check poussin and whocares repositories (there may be other I don't know about) ?

If you want a test drive in the new OS, there is a VM available for test purposes only :

That way you can make up your mind objectively.

I second the question.

My ReadyNAS came with the only possible app that I can think of: Retrospect backup software.

Maybe you are setting a music/video server or something?

If you need more apps, get an iPhone 🙂

Re: Will Not Buy a ReadyNAS ever again

Well, I have increasingly felt the pinch of owning older devices running 4.x, with no solid upgrade path to 6.x. Yeah, I get why there's no money in doing it. But there is a very clear migration of developers away from 4.x now, and for those of us who do enjoy running apps on them it gets increasingly harder to maintain.

As for the Duo, was that an ARM-based system running 5.x? Yeah, I have no clue what the app space is like there, but that was like a quick blip on the way to ROS6. I don't know if other SOHO NAS vendors do any better on the sustainability measure, but I wouldn't be too happy if I was trying to execute my use cases on a 5.x box...

It's the one thing I caution people about buying any such product... get an idea of your use cases and the capabilities of the systems you're interested in BEFORE plopping down the $$$. I wouldn't have any problem recommending ReadyNAS on newer hardware and ROS6, but anyone seeking older hardware still around (perhaps to save $$$) I would caution against that.
