Would you be comfortable running an upgraded 12 year old ReadyNAS Ultra 2 Plus if you put in brand new disks?
I am considering returning to this old reliable after running out of patience with it's replacement; the Synology DS720+ which I have experienced file access delays since purchasing! All default settings and apparently this is a known thing. Unbelievable.
The ReadyNAS still seems to just work including the disks, but I wouldn't trust them just because of their age. With new disks, I have no reason to believe this thing won't run for another 12 years. Obviously running OS 6.10.7 and 2GB RAM.
In a previous thread (below) it was mentioned that if the system failed but I had the disks, they (using BTRFS) could be read from a linux system running mdadm which I have on a raspberry pi with an SATA/USB adapter.
Yes, but with some caveats: Upgrade RAM to 2GB, convert to OS6, don't plan to use any apps, and make sure you are using RAID.
It's true that Netgear appears to be going out of the NAS business, and I would not suggest using a RedayNAS for business use because of the outdated Linux core of its OS. But I believe it will be safe for the average user for some time to come. If you were purchasing the NAS, I might suggest differently, but putting one you already own back into service is still a viable solution, IMHO.
