readynas nv+ green disk LED no longer lights up

One of the green disk LED no longer lights up on a readynas NV+. What are my options? Disk is fine and present in that slot.

Re: readynas nv+ green disk LED no longer lights up

Usually this is an indication of a disk failure, if the disk appears and shows healthy then I would want to check that with more than just those two indicators.

Do you have RAIDar on a machine that is local to the NAS?
If you do, make sure to check the indicators in RAIDar.

I would also go to Status > Logs > Download All Logs (in the upper right hand corner). Once downloaded you can extract them and look at the Disk_smart logs, there should be a bunch of them that have dates (depending on how long the NAS has been online) and then one that just reads "disk_smart.log". The last mentioned would be the one I would want to check for any reallocated sectors or ATA errors. Please post back what you find.

If you are not sure how to interpret the logs, you can send them to me or post them here for further analysis.

Re: readynas nv+ green disk LED no longer lights up

I logged into the frontview site and took a look at the disks - all are in good shape. I also clicked on SMART and took a look at the various metrics present. None seemed out of order. My assumption is that the SMART screen for the disk would show errors if there were issues - currently it says OK. I cannot run RAIDar at present since I am not at home - however, I do have shell access and I just took a look at the following log:

/var/log/frontview/disk_smart_2012_03_18.log
=== START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION ===
SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSED

That is the message for:
***** Disk SMART log for channel X [hdc] *****
where X is 1 through 4.

Where else should I be looking?

Re: readynas nv+ green disk LED no longer lights up

The Seagate ST2000DL003-9VT166 seem unreliable. The drive in question has 359 hours. The LED went off. I pulled out the drive. Hot event detected. Inserted the drive back in. RAID resync started and the light is now flashing. So, it is not an LED issue but rather a drive issue as pointed out earlier. Why was an alert not provided? Which log should I be looking at to find out what happened? Why is it now doing a resync and not complaining about a bad drive? Why has it not complained about the drive at all ever?

Re: readynas nv+ green disk LED no longer lights up

What's the disk_smart log like for that drive? Please post the full log for that drive (omitting the drive serial number). The 2012_03_18 one should be fine (or the last one before you removed and readded the drive)

The NAS runs short SMART tests daily and on boot. SMART won't always detect a problem disk. Testing the drive using SeaTools running both the short and long tests would be the way to go.

Re: readynas nv+ green disk LED no longer lights up

After the sync completed this morning the LED is off again. No SMART errors. I guess I have to get a drive enclosure and test the harddrive... Any other thoughts?

Re: readynas nv+ green disk LED no longer lights up

It is best to test the drive while it is connected directly to the motherboard of a PC. Most of the testing applications will not work fully on a drive connected via an enclosure connected to USB.

Another question that was asked but I have not seen an answer to is what are the indicators like when you open RAIDar? In the column for disks you should have 4 indicators and the ones for each installed drive should be green.

Re: readynas nv+ green disk LED no longer lights up

Ouch - I don't own a regular PC with a motherboard. Only Windows laptops and a Macbook Air.
All four are green on RAIDar and the first is off on the NAS itself. There must be some log somewhere which says something about the LED being off on the NAS display if indeed it is intentional and not a faulty LED.

Re: readynas nv+ green disk LED no longer lights up

In the logs what does it indicate for that disk in enclosure.log?

Sounds like a faulty LED.

When did you purchase this NV+? Was it purchased brand new on/after Aug 21, 2007?

Re: readynas nv+ green disk LED no longer lights up

The NAS was purchased used about two months ago to join another that I had bought new several years ago. No labels present so I cannot tell you any sort of date. What is important about Aug 21, 2007?

Re: readynas nv+ green disk LED no longer lights up

NV+ units purchased brand new on/after Aug 21, 2007 would still be under warranty. Warranty was 5 years from AUg 21, 2007 to sometime in 2009, I think.

If you purchased it used your options are rather limited I think. Probably have to put up with the dead LED.

Re: readynas nv+ green disk LED no longer lights up

I am handy with a soldering iron - is it easily replaceable? Are the LEDs all on a separate replaceable board?

Can warranty not be determined by serial number?

Re: readynas nv+ green disk LED no longer lights up

Warranty can be determined by the serial number, but unless the previous owner notified Netgear about the transfer of ownership, and you got it registered in your name, you could have problems getting tech support for their records will show someone else as the registered owner.

I replaced the drive and the LED still goes off periodically. No errors or alerts generated.

Warranty worked out - RMA in process.

I'm glad that you have an RMA in process at the moment. Does the SMART data pick up the new serial number on the drive?

Yes. New serial number and other SMART data being picked up and visible in frontview for the drive in the bay being questioned...

Re: readynas nv+ green disk LED no longer lights up

Hi did you ever manage to fix the led fault or just ram, I also have this problem with a V2 version,, it was lighting all 4 drives now just 3 but the drives are fine.. If you did ram di you get a replacement unit and if so did you just put the old drives back in and it worked or did you need to start again..thanks

Re: readynas nv+ green disk LED no longer lights up

The RAM is soldered on in the V2 and not replaceable. When did you purchase the NV+ v2. If you just purchased it and a disk LED is faulty return it to your reseller in exchange for a new one. Otherwise open a tech support case. NetGear would likely need to replace the unit with a refurbished unit if the disk LED is confirmed as dead. You could choose to keep the unit if you want but would need to bear in mind the dead LED.
