Heres a lesson to ALL BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP.
I did (well all the important stuff)
so glad i did as a factory reset fixed it.
now a full reset up required and a restore! that will take about a day LOL but at leasdt I had the backup!! well thats after a full re-sync LOL (that will take hours-4X4TB drives!)

Sounds like you probably had a full 4GB root volume, perhaps due to an app e.g. MySQL storing data on the root volume instead of the data volume.

Not really. It downloads the upgrade to the OS partition before it installs it. That likley took the last of your available space and the OS could not clean up after the upgrade without enough working space.
