Can'complete OS reinstall on my ReadyNAS Ultra 2
My ReadyNAS has been perfectly working up to now.
After changing both 1 To HD on my device, OS reinstall doesn't perform any more.
I've been waiting more than 36 hours but nothing happens. Both disk LED remains lit.
Disk test is OK.
How considering reinstalling firmware ? But I only found firmware upgrades on this site.
Any idea ?
Thanks.

DId you replace both disks at the same time?
What firmware are you running?
What status does RAIDar tell you? https://kb.netgear.com/20684/ReadyNAS-Downloads#raidar

Re: Can'complete OS reinstall on my ReadyNAS Ultra 2
Hi,
Yes I replaced bith disks at the same time. Actually I needed old disks for another computer and I bought two brand new 1 To HD.
No idea about the firmware. Never updated, it should be the original one.
No status from RAIDar, device is not recognized (except when I do a disk check).

What disk models did you install?
Do you see the NAS in the list of attached devices shown in your router?
I suggest
- testing the disks with vendor tools in a PC (lifeguard for western digital, seatools for seagate)
- trying the factory install boot option shown on pages14-15 here: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RNDU2000/ReadyNAS_Ultra_UltraPlus_NVX_Pro_HW_en_8July11.p...
Then update the firmware (which requires that disks be installed).

Re: Can'complete OS reinstall on my ReadyNAS Ultra 2
Disks are Samsung HD103SJ (1 To / 7200 rpm). I'vec checked the disks, both are OK.
NAS is invisible.
I've tried firmware upgrading. It failed. The device doesn't shutdown after a time as mentionned in the guide. Only the powerswitch button LED is lit, not the four other LEDs.
Tried several different USB keys. Same result.
I think the firmware is corrupted.

If you remove the disks and power it up, does it show up in RAIDar with a "no disks" status?

I think trying USB recovery was a mistake - hopefully no harm was done.

Re: Can'complete OS reinstall on my ReadyNAS Ultra 2
Yes it does.
Moreover, last night I've tried erasing disks via RAIDar. It failed after being working overnight. Status was still "erasing disks" this morning.

That does a very slow "secure erase". It you interrupt it the disks will likely end up locked, so at this point you need to just wait for it.

Re: Can'complete OS reinstall on my ReadyNAS Ultra 2
@Plumiere I'd expect you have more chances of getting your issue fixed here, as there are more active contributors.
So now whenever you try to perform a Factory Default, it doesn't complete. You tried several individual HDDs, in both bays.
As you had attempted a USB Boot Recovery and it failed, I advised you to try it again. You did, and it still failed on several USB sticks.
Am I correct?

Re: Can'complete OS reinstall on my ReadyNAS Ultra 2
It sounds like you may need a USB recovery, but that it didn't work. The NAS is very particular about what USB device you use. I have found that older is generally better.
Are you still running OS 4.2.x on your Ultra, or did you update to OS 6.x? You cannot use the OS 6.x USB recovery tool on a legacy system, regardless of what OS you are running. You have to use the OS 4.2.x recovery tool. I believe you can use an OS6 image masquerading as OS4.2.x with that tool, though.

Re: Can'complete OS reinstall on my ReadyNAS Ultra 2
I tried RAIDiator-x86-4.2.28 file, but it failed.
I beleive the sequence I used was correct, i.e., plugging USB into front port (under Backup button), holding 15-20 seconds backup button pressed while switching on NAS, then releasing button. But nothing happens, even after hours.
I'll try to get some older USB and retry. Any other idea ?

OK, and you used the USB recover process here:RAIDiator-4-2-USB-Recovery-Tool, not the 6.x one? If so, then it does sound like you need a different USB flash device. "Doing nothing" is, unfortunately, the only clue you get that it doesn't like the key. The process doesn't take long, so there is no need to wait for an extended time to see if it will work.
It would be nice if the recovery generation tool had a way to check compatibility.

Yes I used the right tool. I'll try to get some other USB and see if it works.
Thank you.

Re: Can'complete OS reinstall on my ReadyNAS Ultra 2
Yes, I tried several USB with several computers running W7 or W10. With my W10 desktop, usbrecovery can't be launched. The error returned is "The application has failed to start because the side by side configuration is incorrect ...".
