Genie app won't connect to OpenDNS
Just tried using parental controls in Genie App but it will never connect to OpenDNS during the setup process.
I have now created two accounts in OpenDNS and the accounts work fine at the OpenDNS website.
But Genie App will not connect to either of them - keep getteing error that password is wrong, even though p/w works fine at OpenDNS site.
Any suggestions?

Re: Genie app won't connect to OpenDNS
Hi @BizLorax,
Thank you for providing the information. As it stands, the LPC (Live Parental Controls) feature for NETGEAR cable modem-routers are still currently being worked on and are not yet made fully functional as firmwares for these devices still require certification from the ISP's which make modifications or updates take more time compared to stand alone routers.

Re: Genie app won't connect to OpenDNS
Dexter
Thanks for explaining this.
It is a bit troubling that a device could be sold with no functional parental controls.
In this day and age I would think parental controls would be a 'standard' feature - not an add on.
But thanks again for explaining why this feature does not work.

Re: Genie app won't connect to OpenDNS
Do you know when this might be resolved? One of the reasons I purchased my Netgear modem was for the parental controls.

Re: Genie app won't connect to OpenDNS
Hi @mikemolone,
We currently do not have an ETA for the fix. Alternatively, you can take advantage of the "Block Sites" feature of your NETGEAR device. You may refer to the link below for the instructions:

Re: Genie app won't connect to OpenDNS
maybe you should let your other techs know about this instead of having customers on the phone for hours troubleshooting something that currently has no fix. I will have to return this R8000 and exchange for ASUS, as my old one worked perfectly for parental controls.(unless Netgear comes up with a "quickfix" soon)

Re: Genie app won't connect to OpenDNS
so frustrated by this also - I purchased a linksys last month and found out the parental controls consisted of me blocking up to 8 sites by manually putting them in - not helpful - so I just purchased this NightHawk because it looked like the parental controls were stellar - now I get all this work done on it (purchase, install, set up, download genie etc..) and it won't work - I cant get it to sign in! I'm so frustrated. can't believe it doesnt even work! I have the r7000. pulling my hair out right now - whats left of it...

Re: Genie app won't connect to OpenDNS
Hi @rock_roller,
The LPC (Live Parental Control) feature does work with the R8000 router. My previous response was referring to NETGEAR Cable modem-routers. However, if you are currently having issues logging in to your OpenDNS account through the NETGEAR Genie, I suggest using an iOS or MAC OS X device since we are in the process of coming up with a fix for Windows and Android.

Dexter

Re: Genie app won't connect to OpenDNS
Hi @KHouse,
We apologize for the inconvenience that this situation has caused you. Engineering is already working on a fix for this. In the mean time, I recommend logging in to your OpenDNS account using an iOS or MAC OS X device for you to manage your LPC settings.

Dexter

Re: Genie app won't connect to OpenDNS
The new router R7000 just came today. I purchased for parental control only. It is disappointing actually the parental control SW actually does not work! It is hard to believe how the product is made and advertised to support this as a major feature!
Tried the windows netgearGenie, and used the parental control to login OpenDNS account. It says "there was an error signing in ..."
Then moved back to create a new account for OpenDNS with netgearGenie. It still complained the same thing.
Then read this thread and it was suggested to use iOS to setup the parental control. I also tried that. But once you select the parental control and entered your username and password, it will crash!
Nothing worked.

Re: Genie app won't connect to OpenDNS
Any update on a fix for this issue. Based on previous posts and my own experience, it appears that the parental controls don't work regardless of the device. I have tried Windows and iOS. At least with Windows I get an error message on iOS (tried on both an iPhone and iPad) the genie app crashes when trying to configure parental controls. It doesn't appear that Netgear is treating this issue with much urgency based on how long this issue has been opened. This is the primary reason I bought the router, I'm not sure there is much reason to keep the router unless there is some indication that Netgear is treating this issue with some urgency and will provide a fix soon.

Re: Genie app won't connect to OpenDNS
I was having the same problem as everyone else trying to log into the parental controls and tried everything in this thread with no luck on my R7000 router. I was messing around and have managed to get mine to work so here is what I did.
I logged into my router through a webpage using the IP address. Under the advanced tab at the top there is a setup wizzard tab on the left. I clicked on this and it gave me the option below.
The Smart Setup Wizard can detect the type of Internet connection that you have. |
Do you want the Smart Setup Wizard to try and detect the connection type now? |
Yes |
No. I want to configure the router myself. |
I clicked on Yes and then clicked next below this message. It then took a couple of minutes while it was checking my internet settings. Once that was complete it showed my settings and I then clicked next where it went to another page with options to download the genie app and ready share. I unchecked both and clicked next again since I already have these. It then checked my firmware for any upgrades and since mine was up to date I just hit ok and continued on. After that it took me the the registration page for my router as I guess I had never registered it. This page would not take my info so I closed the page and then opened a new webpage and went here and since I didn't have an account I clicked on register here under new product registration. I completed this and then closed out of the pages and then opened up Genie and it allowed me to complete the sign in to opendns and set up the parental controls. I'm not sure if it was just the setup portion that fixed things or if it had anything to do with the registration process so you may not have to worry about the registration part? This worked for me so hopefully it will work for some others.

Re: Genie app won't connect to OpenDNS-still doesn't work for me
I just retried launching genie app on my android and from PC app and genie will still not accept my OpenDNS password (but the same p/w works fine at OpenDNS website).
I haven't yet tried the fully automated router setup suggested by someone else, affraid it will mess-up my internet connection entirely. When I have more time I'll try that.
But as it stands genie is a complete dud for me.
