As an end user, you cannot update the firmware on a combination modem/router device. You have to work with your ISP to have them update the firmware. Who is your ISP? Some have a better record than others for updating the firmware on the combination devices.

That message probably has nothing to do with the modem/router not working.
@Kitsap is right in saying that you can't update the firmware. The trouble is that last year Netgear released a broken iOS app that threw up that meaningless message.
I'd look for other ways of fixing your "won't work" issue. What problem do you have beyond that message?

I don't have ios.. and I'm not able to use the app to control my router/modem... It says cannot use app, firmware is out of date click on link to update
