Netgear Genie 'Router Login' problem

When I got my Netgear CG3000D cable gateway I changed Remote Management's 'Remote User Name' & 'Remote Password'. Then I discovered Netgear Genie. But now when I try to use Netgear Genie's 'Router Login', it fails. It fails because Netgear Genie has 'User Name' hard-coded to "Admin". As a workaround, I logged into the gateway and tried to change the Remote Management, 'Remote User Name' to "Admin", but it won't let me do that. It says: "Status: New name is duplicated."

If Netgear Genie won't let me change the 'Router Login' to my current user name, and the gateway won't let me change the 'Remote User Name' to "Admin", how can I use Netgear Genie?

Thanks for any help,

Mark.

Hi @xxxxxxx,

Have you tried resetting the device back to factory defaults?

Re: Netgear Genie 'Router Login' problem

I have the exact same issue, but I use admin as user name, so fine by me. It has worked for some time now, but all of a sudden I can't login?! I tried changing the password but I says login failed please use correct password blah blah? Wth is that all about?? I run iOS 9, maybe that's the problem?? And don't ask me to reset to factory, why would I want or have to do that??

besides this kind of annoying issue, I freakin love my Nigthhawk, woof!! Glad I exchanged my Asus router for this :0)

Re: Netgear Genie 'Router Login' problem

Hey Cruelman,

Try logging in as

Username: MSO

Password: changeme

I found that tip as I searched the Internet. Netgear doesn't have it in the documentation, but it worked for me. Then I changed the password. I recommend that if this works for you, you should change the password also. Otherwise, anyone who knows that remote login can zombiefy your modem.

Re: Netgear Genie 'Router Login' problem

Hi, Dexter,

I just restored the factory default as you suggest.

Before I did it, I saved the old setup (as 'GatewaySettings -before restore-.bin'). Then I saved the settings after the restore (as 'GatewaySettings -after restore-.bin'). They are significantly different.

Do you know: Is there a utility for 'reading' (i.e., 'dumping') the contents of the '.bin' files as human readable (Engish) text?

Thanks.

Mark.

Re: Netgear Genie 'Router Login' problem

Hi @xxxxxxx,

There is no immediate way to make the BIN file easily readable unlike other config files. You can check this link and see if it is something that you are willing to try.

Re: Netgear Genie 'Router Login' problem

Thank you, Dexter, but the link is not applicable. Netgear's 'GatewaySettings.bin' file is not that kind of a '.bin' file. That kind of '.bin' file refers to old 'binary-executable' files that are produced by a compiler, but before they're bound by a linker (after which they become '.exe' files).

The Netgear 'GatewaySettings.bin' file is just a binary data file that contains the router settings. There is no public, published format for such a file. The only folks who would know how to 'read' such a file would be the folks who write the Netgear utilities.

Another way to find the format of the 'GatewaySettings.bin' file is to look at the Netgear utilites header file ('.h' file). It contains the static values used by the linker to bind the Netgear utilities.

Can you send me the '.h' file?

Thank You.

Re: Netgear Genie 'Router Login' problem

The saga continues...

Hi, Dexter,

I have a new development. I reset the gateway. I now obtain access via username: "admin", however, my attempts to use Netgear Genie still fail.

When I run Netgear Genie and attempt Router Login, I get this error: "Login failed. The router response timed out."

As the IP, I tried 192.168.0.1 (which is the gateway's LAN address), and I tried 10.51.103.9 (which apparently is the router's address in the intermediate link between the cable modem part of the gateway and the router part of the gateway). I can manually log in as "admin" via Firefox at either IP address.

I suspected the Windows Firewall. So I tried this Firewall rule:

Name: Mark's Netgear Genie
Group Profile: Public
Enabled: Yes
Action: Allow
Program Local Address: C:\Program Files (x86)\NETGEAR Genie\bin\NETGEARGenie.exe
Remote Address: Any
Protocol: Any
Local Port: Any
Remote Port: Any
Allowed Computers: Any

When that didn't work, I unconditionally enabled all outbound Firewall connections. That didn't work.

I'm out of ideas. Do you have any?

Thank You.

Re: Netgear Genie 'Router Login' problem

Hi @xxxxxxx,

I believe you were informed on another thread that the firmware of the device that you have may have interoperability issues with the NETGEAR Genie program/app. This may lead to certain functions of the app not integrating properly with the device due to settings or restrictions set by the ISP on the firmware.

Hi Dexter... "may have interoperability issues"? "certain functions ... not integrating properly"? Netgear Genie can't even seem to find the gateway (192.168.0.1). I think that may be the real issue.

No disrespect, but you guys are supposed to be Netgear support. If I want weasel words, I'll go to the U.S. Federal Government.

These domains do exist, but they have no HTTP portal and they don't PING.

Even if they did exist as web pages, what does visiting a web page have to do with logging into a router?

Hi @xxxxxxx,

That address will direct you to the login page of your NETGEAR device. It is similar to using the IP address of your router/gateway.

Are you kidding? I assume you are referring to www.routerlogin.com & www.routerlogin.net. How does submitting either of those get you to your router/gateway? Are you running some sort of special 'HOSTS' file that maps them to 192.168.0.1 (or 192.168.1.1)? Of course, those 2 URLs go to the Internet.

Do you live in Colorado? Are you sampling the Colorado weed?
