Router has been running fine for a couple of years, but today I can no longer connect either on a pc or a mobile device

That looks like a gateway, a modem/router. So you have two routers on your network.
Two routers on your network can cause headaches. For example, you can end up with local address problems. Among other things, the other router can misdirect addresses that the Netgear router usually handles, such as routerlogin.net or the usual IP address for a router, 192.168.1.1.
This explains some of the other drawbacks.

Unless you have specific reasons for using two routers – to create two separate networks for example – it is often easier to use just one router and then to set up the second router as a wifi access point. Netgear advises this, as does just about every site you will visit.
It may be possible to put the modem/router into modem only (bridge) mode and then to use the second device as the router. There may be ways to get the modem/router to cooperate.

Sometimes it is easier to put the second router into AP mode. But that has its own drawbacks:

What firmware are you on?
Do any devices connect?
what modem/gateway are you on?
What error does it give you? Does it say "connected, no internet", does it not detect a wireless signal at all, does it detect but won't connect to it? What actual error is it?
Do wired devices work?

What firmware are you on? The latest - I just did a factory reset and a check firmware
Do any devices connect? Sporadically - after the factory reset it seemed to be working again, but after a while, it stopped

What error does it give you? Does it say "connected, no internet", does it not detect a wireless signal at all, does it detect but won't connect to it? What actual error is it? Tries to connect, fails with "Can't connect to this network" - from my mobile device it is currently telling me that the password is wrong, but this is untue!

OK - so I "turned it off and on again" and it is currently connecting on my mobile, so I can provide the firmware version, which is V1.0.5.106

Network looked like it was back to normal for a while, then I tried to re-connect the USB drive we use as a ReadySHARE device and everything stopped working again!!!
Looks like within 10 minutes or so of re-connecting this device, the network becomes unusable! Have repeated this test and got same results twice
