Re: R8000 no longer connects remotely with Genie app after latest firmware

In the mean time I will just have to keep catching my teenage son finding porn sites and infecting my computer because I can not access my parental controls!

Re: R8000 no longer connects remotely with Genie app after latest firmware

Is there any solution to this yet?  I can no longer use the destop application or the iphone/ipad applications.  I can only log onto the router via the webpage.

No fix yet. All I keep getting told by Dexter is the engineers are working on it.

Time to conclude and inform current and future users (R8000)

1. Genie wont work as descibed

2. Airplay is unstable

3. Random lock/restart

You may run an old and potentially vulnerable firmware (+1y old). Genie will work, but other problems may be related to that version. And you are of cause more vulnerable to cyber attacks.

There is no reason to hope for a firmwareupdate as R8000 is now an older product in Netgears range. So you buy this products with the known flaws, that may or may not be critical to your use, with the well known and -documented support from Netgear.

Re: Time to conclude and inform current and future users (R8000)

It sucks because here we spent the money for this product and it is potentially harmful to our systems. I purchased mine a year ago and am now with out a job, cannot run out and buy a new one. If I could this is the last Netgear product I will ever purchase again. I will make sure to research and make sure any and all future products are not even affiliated with Netgear!!!!

My product is less than 1 year old. Can I make a warranty claim since this is a known defect?

Re: Time to conclude and inform current and future users (R8000)

I understand your frustrations, but just to let you know: I replaced a high-end Asus router, double price, with the R8000. The Asus UI, logging and advanced features was superiour  - it was just incredible *not able* to do the basics: Keep all connections alive  (!!!!), keep internet connection up, perform on Wifi etc.

These consumer products do not deliver all the nice fantasies the priomise. But I'd pick R8000 again, maybe even R7000 (same Airplay challenge by the way) - but never pay the extra for a more advanced and not working unit. Sorry, this is what you can't find in any review around. Buy low end and maybe 2 units from 2 producers?

Thanks for the info and no the warranty is 90 days. Then they try to sell you services for all your computers tablets and what ever else anytime you call.

Re: Time to conclude and inform current and future users (R8000)

This also means things like parental controls (the reason I bought this router) will no longer be available correct?  When I go to the parental controls section it tells me to download the genie app (which I can't use because it wont connect).

Has Dexter weighed in on this "solution"?

Re: Time to conclude and inform current and future users (R8000)

Correct, it only works from a browser, in a very bad designed page. It's a pity because Netgears routers (that I know of) are the only to support blocking of wired devices.

Re: Time to conclude and inform current and future users (R8000)

Correct. That has been my main complaint. I have caught my teenage son on stuff that he should not be on already. I don't know what idiot designed it this way. We should be able to access all features through routerlogin.com. The app should only make it easier for those who do not understand the options on routerlogin.

Re: Time to conclude and inform current and future users (R8000)

I just installed a router of a different brand. Guess what: app works, blocking works, and airplay connects AND keeps the connection. Even Wifi coverage is better than R8000. I can only encourage people who have problems with this router to stop hoping for solutions or workarounds. It's waste of time.

Re: Time to conclude and inform current and future users (R8000)

All,

Try the new V1.0.3.48_1.1.33 official firmware.  If that does not work, Netgear has a beta firmware and I can confirm that it fixes these issues.  PM me if you are interested on how I got the beta.

Regards,

Michael
