I also got this message:
Unable to connect
An error occurred during a connection to (the dot net address I was told to go to, for some reason the forum will not let me put that in the post, very strange)
So it seems that I can connect to the extender, but its not seeing the router.

So I found out that theres no way to connect with a WPS button (there is none on my router).Is there another way to connect?

Go to the Downloads section above and download the Installation Guide. On page 2 of the installation guide, it gives detailed instructions for connecting to the Netgear Installation Assistant using either a computer or a mobile device over Wi-Fi.

The WPS button has baffled many people. They don't realise that it is there, but cunningly hidden.
You don't say what your router is (Spectrum is an ISP that provides various boxes), but Netgear's routers use a combined LED/Switch for this. (Same for the WiFI.)
It is often the one on the front that has this symbol:
WPS
Then again, maybe Spectrum has found routers with no WPS.
