Cannot connect to extender network X6 AC2200 Model EX7700

Hello. We can't connect to the extender network NETGEAR_EXT...it shows up on my mobile as a wireless network, but when we try to connect it says "Authentication error occurred".  I've had a good look around the solutions/Q&A here but nothing addresses it directly...I can see a couple of possible problems / solutions but rather than **** things up further would really appreciate someone stepping us through it! We have tried connecting with WPS but no response either.  Many thanks, Veronica & Branko (NZ).

    What router are you using?

    What security are you using on the router (wpa/wep/wpa2)?

    Any special characters in the password or ssid from the main router?

    What firmware is on the extender? 

    You said you setup via wps, did you try the installation wizard?

    Also, try doing the setup while hardwired into the extender. This tends to go smoother.
