Ok so it makes sense to not be connecting with WiFi when the ext is connected via Ethernet, thanks. However when I follow the steps in mywifiext.net it still falls over at the point where I try to connect my wireless device. I can't even get to the part where I can update the firmware.
I wonder if my extender is kaput. Maybe it was damaged somehow by being unplugged every day...?

Unplugging daily probably didn't help.
You could try reloading the firmware. Resetting the device only removes the settings. If the firmware was corrupted somehow, you need to reload it. If you are unable to get to that part of the gui while using the browser, you could try reloading it via tftp. Here's the instructions how to do it. Follow every step when doing so.

When you say "it fails when you're connecting your wirless devices" do you mean you can go through the full setup and get the extender conencted back to the router? So the extender should work via the hardwired connection?
What are all the led's doing when you get to that point? (color, blinking/solid, etc)

Hi again,
I have had a go following the link that you shared, thanks for that. I only got as far as part 2a where it says to right click on the windows start button and select network connections. I am operating Windows 7 so quite an old system. When I open up Network and Sharing Centre (which I presume is the equivalent to Network Connections), there is no Ethernet to right click on. I am sort of at a loss of how to proceed from here.
I can get the extender connected to the router, but when I hardwire it to the laptop, I lose all internet, even through the main modem. When the extender is not connected to the laptop there are 2 green solid lights. These do not change when I connect the ethernet cable but a third light appears which is 2 arrows (one pointing up, one pointing down). This is also a solid green light.
