EAX20 poor connection to router (RAX20)

Have been using EAX20 extender with RAX20 router for about a year, but now the extender can only get a very poor connection to the router. Nothing has changed in terms of configuration or location of extender or router or anything in between. Extender simply always shows red LED indicating poor connection. Even when I move it into the same room as the router and put it 5 ft away, red LED. Have tried factory reset but no go. Is this thing just suddenly trash or can it be fixed?
