apple products not connecting to netgear wifi range extender

I recently moved into a new place where there's already a netgear wifi range extender set up on my floor (3rd) right in front of my bedroom, but for some reason my macbook pro and iphone will only connect to the main wifi on the 1st floor, so most of the time I can't get a signal and when I do it's super slow (~1mbps or less). I've tried troubleshooting in the network settings on my mac and restarting the range extender, but I haven't tried resetting the extender to its factory settings since I don't have any info like the ISP, IP address, etc (still waiting for this info from the landlord). I'm just wondering if there's maybe something else that I could try in the meantime?

Additional information:

- I have a macbook pro retina 15" 2014 os sierra and an iphone 7

- The extender has the same name + password as the main wifi

- Netgear wifi range extender model WN2000RPTv2

- I don't have an ethernet cable or the adapter for my mac

- I'm not tech savvy

Please help!
