Warcraft Reforged:
Publisher: Blizzard Entertainment

So many memories. The first real serious LAN parties I attended were centered around three games, DOOM, Quake and Warcraft. While the first two usually consisted of playing the last mod we found or made, Warcraft was always the true test of your wits, attention, skill and computer.

A little history:
Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos was released in 2002. It was the second sequel to Warcraft: Orcs & Humans and before World of Warcraft. The story picks up several years after Warcraft II. The Burning Legion withthe help of the Undead are now invading Azeroth and the Human Alliance, Orcish Horde and Night Elves must stop them before they corrupt the world tree and destroy Azeroth.
A pure RTS, player’s collect resources, build bases and upgrades to train and upgr
ade their army units. In single player mode, there are additional goals the player needs to achieve or defeat the enemy. Players can choose four factions: Humans, Orcs, Night Elves and Undead and proceed through the single player mode or play games against
other players in multiplayer.

Reforged? Or Refunded?
The good news is the strength of the core game mechanics still shines through. The story is still as engaging as you remembered it. The updated graphics are great. In essence, it’s the same game.

The bad news is all the promise and teases Blizzard gave are really nowhere to be found. The UI is the same and you are still hindered by allowing only 12-unit groups.
A key frustration is the UI while servable in 2002, is really a clunker in 2020. The disapp
earance of clans, leaderboards, and now you digitally sign over your rights when making custom maps just adds to the death by a thousand papercuts of minor complaints. The rebalancing of units doesn’t 100% work and you are left scratching your head as to why Blizzard was remastering this, they actually chopped out features and left the game in a worst state. It’s like the feeling you got the first time you saw Han dodge Greedo’s blaster and then shoot and kill the Rodian Bountyhunter. Fans deeply panned the game to the point of Blizzard offering refunds no matter how much a player had played the game. They also apologized for the state the game was in. With other publishers pushing back their titles to complete or polish the game, one wonders what could have been if Blizzard had put another 6 months into this. It could have been glorious.

The conclusion is, it’s a good game, it’s just not a remastered version of the game we grew up with and loved.
