Ethernet randomly disconnects for a few seconds
Hey all, so I've been fighting this issue with my XR500 for about 2 months now. Out of the blue, my desktop would randomly lose connection for a few seconds and then regain connection. As far as I can tell, my wifi is not affected when this happens. My motherboard has two NICs (Intel I219-V and I211) and the disconnects happen on both. I went out recently and grabbed a USB to Ethernet adapter and it's doing the same thing as my onboard NICs so I'm sort of thinking it's the router at this point as I've also tried different ethernet cables, factory resetting the XR500, and doing a clean format of Windows 10 to no avail. When the disconnects happens, Event Viewer records Event ID 27 for my I219-V and this is the XML for it:
- <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event"> - <System> <Provider Name="e1dexpress" /> <EventID Qualifiers="40964">27</EventID> <Level>3</Level> <Task>0</Task> <Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords> <TimeCreated SystemTime="2020-01-17T19:21:50.423191000Z" /> <EventRecordID>2160</EventRecordID> <Channel>System</Channel> <Computer>DESKTOP-US6G74E</Computer> <Security /> </System> - <EventData> <Data /> <Data>Intel(R) Ethernet Connection (2) I219-V</Data> <Binary>0000040002003000000000001B0004A00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001B0004A0</Binary> </EventData> </Event>
Event viewer isn't recording when the USB ethernet adapter drops the connection, so I can't see what error/XML data that's giving.
I'm not sure what else to try at this point as it's really starting to get iritating. I would request a warranty replacement if there's no other things I can try, but I never uploaded my receipt when I bought it from Micro Center and no longer have it, so I have a feeling Netgear would deny that request.

Re: Ethernet randomly disconnects for a few seconds
Slight update. The connection drops every 30 minutes on the dot, same exact seconds and everything. A note in the logs says the internet connection has connected, so now I'm assuming it's network wide instead of just the ethernet ports. Any suggestions? I can't think of anything off-hand.

Re: Ethernet randomly disconnects for a few seconds
It's a strange mix of symptoms. I'd suggest that it was an issue between your modem and your router, except that you say WiFi remains unaffected. I notice that all of the ethernet adapters you've used are connected to one computer. Do you have a laptop, tablet or anything that can be connected via ethernet? I would like to know if the problem occurs on this device as well.

Re: Ethernet randomly disconnects for a few seconds
Hi Alex,
I've confirmed that it does happen to another device, and is actually happening across the network now that I've looked into it. It appears that it may have something to do with the DHCP lease/renew time from my ISP since it happens every 30 minutes on the dot? I've checked across the Netduma forums, and it appears there have been a few cases like mine that have shown up. I've posted over there myself, and got a reply from Frayser who I sent some logs. I can send them to you as well if you would like.

Re: Ethernet randomly disconnects for a few seconds
Yeah, still happens after setting a static IP on one of my wired devices.
Arris SB8200 -> XR500 -> Desktop (Has two NICs, an Intel I-219V and I211 and this occurs on both).
Everything else is wireless

Re: Ethernet randomly disconnects for a few seconds
Not that I'm aware of. All I know for sure is if I restart the router, the 30 minutes thing resets to the time the router comes back on. Say if I restart it right now, it'll disconnect at 3:36, and again at 4:06.
I did PM both you and Alex the logs over on the Netduma forums, don't know if you've taken a look yet though.

Re: Ethernet randomly disconnects for a few seconds
Alex, my SB8200 is just a standard modem, not a modem/router combo. Won't this matter if I put in AP mode as the modem won't be assigning IP addresses?
Tried it anyways and had no access to internet from my wired devices.

Re: Ethernet randomly disconnects for a few seconds
Put it after the RAX75 I ended up picking up, it's not doing it in AP mode.

Re: Ethernet randomly disconnects for a few seconds
It seems to only want to do it when it's getting the IP directly from the modem. The RAX75 isn't doing it at all, so that's interesting.

Re: Ethernet randomly disconnects for a few seconds
I did unplug the RAX and put the XR500 back behind the modem, still getting those 30 minute DHCP renew/releases though. Personally, I'd rather keep using the XR500 if possible since I got a little better range, but those 30 minute drops were driving me nuts.

Re: Ethernet randomly disconnects for a few seconds
One more thing, Cox seems to only be giving me a 1 hour DHCP lease, so the router is asking every 30 minutes to renew it and is losing that connection momentarily when it renews I guess.

Re: Ethernet randomly disconnects for a few seconds
I can see try, but they're currently saying that this is Netgear issue since the device should not be losing connection on renewal though.
Any idea why the RAX75 has no issues with renewal while the XR does?

Re: Ethernet randomly disconnects for a few seconds
I believe I did that previously and completely lost internet around the 1 hour mark. A connection drop didn't happen at 30 minutes though. It's unfortunate that Cox does not allow residential customers the ability to get a static IP, otherwise I would have done that.

Re: Ethernet randomly disconnects for a few seconds
No, I've actually been using 1.1.1.1 for a while now. Also have their ipv6 dns setup as well.
