Netgear Nighthawk XR500 GAMING ROUTER settings for IPTV sports streaming

Hello,

I need some help pls. Im not a networking expert and dont really understand the technicalities around networking. However, I was having issues with buffering when I'm watching live live football matches on Nvidia sheild using an app called SmartSTB so I read online that these powerful routers can help.

I dont play games, I have all devices connected directly to my XR500 and my Nvidia Sheild is the only device connected to the XR via ethernet.

The problem I'm having is when a few devices such as bedroom tv, ipad, phones are streaing youtube, netflix etc as well as my Nvidia shield streaimg live football matches, it buffers alot. I have tried allocating 80% of my bandwidth to my Nvidia sheild and even disabled share excess but nothing works, it constantly drops speed to as low as 0.8mbps and that's when its starts buffering like crazy.

I would really appreciate any help with the correct settings. pls.

Re: Netgear Nighthawk XR500 GAMING ROUTER settings for IPTV sports streaming

The XR500 is not one of the Nighthawk Wi-Fi 5 (AC) Routers covered here.

While many questions about routers are generic and could be answered anywhere, some things need specialist knowledge.

You might get more help, and find earlier questions and answers specific to your device, in the appropriate section for your hardware. That's probably here:

Nighthawk Pro Gaming Routers - NETGEAR Communities

Gaming routers have their own DumaOS operating system that is nothing like the one on Netgear's standard routers.

You might like to search there for messages related to your problem.

I will ask the Netgear moderator to move your message.

In the meantime you could visit the support pages:

Support | NETGEAR

Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware. Look at the label on the device for the model number.

Check for various troubleshooting tips.

You may have done this already. I can't tell from your message.

I mention it because Netgear stopped supplying printed manuals and CD versions some years ago and people sometimes miss the downloads.

Just another user with a set of boilerplate macros.

What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6 is recommended.

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?

What devices do you have all connected? Brand and model#

How is Basic and Advanced Wireless settings configured?

What channels are you using? Auto? Try Auto and 48 on 5Ghz. Or try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and 40 to 48 channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?

Set 20/40Mhz Coexistence to 40Mhz only. Save settings and reboot the router and satellite(s). Under Advanced Tab/Advanced Settings/Wireless Settings

The issue is that you need to have ALL devices connected to the XR router, otherwise it cannot control the network for QoS to eliminate the lag for you.

Re: Netgear Nighthawk XR500 GAMING ROUTER settings for IPTV sports streaming

Thanks for your reply. To be honest I have no clue about most of the things you are talking about.

My ISP is Virgin and I have got a Virgin Media SuperHub 3 that is wired to my XR. All the devices are connected to my XR. All devices are connected via wifi except for my Nvidia Shield which is wired to XR.

Its this Nvidia Shield that i really need help with. The issue again is one minute its got enough bandwidth and the next minute it drops to 0.2mbps which then causes the live match Im streaming to start buffering.

Can you provide a screenshot of your QoS page please?

Re: Netgear Nighthawk XR500 GAMING ROUTER settings for IPTV sports streaming

Usually SuperHub 3s are modems with built in wifi and routers. This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. This would be a double NAT condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT
https://kb.netgear.com/30187/How-to-fix-issues-with-Double-NAT
Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the NG router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the NG router gets from the modem. https://kb.netgear.com/25891/DMZ-on-NETGEAR-routers

Try option #2 first...

Re: Netgear Nighthawk XR500 GAMING ROUTER settings for IPTV sports streaming

Thanks again for the response. I believe my set up is what you described in option 1 i.e the modem mode is checked in superhub and XR connected to it via an ethernet cable as the wifi router.

I have also attached screenshot of my qos page. Its worth noting that I have tried so many qos settings in congestion control, bandwidth allocation & traffic prioritisation. This is just what I have right now.

Re: Netgear Nighthawk XR500 GAMING ROUTER settings for IPTV sports streaming

I had a superhub, use the DMZ on it instead as I found that to be more stable. You'll definitely want the Download Congestion to be at least 70%, don't mess around with Bandwidth Allocation at all, reset that and make sure Share Excess is enabled. How do you have Traffic Prioritization set up?

Re: Netgear Nighthawk XR500 GAMING ROUTER settings for IPTV sports streaming

Thank you. Ok, i will reset as instructed.
There is nothing in traffic prioritisation right now as I dont know what to do there. Could you maybe advise the best setting for it?
Could you also advise how to set up dmz on my superhub. Apologies as it may sound like Im asking some obvious questions but I have very little to no experience with networking so bear with pls. Thanks

Re: Netgear Nighthawk XR500 GAMING ROUTER settings for IPTV sports streaming

No worries at all, disable DumaOS Classified Games in Traffic Prioritization for the moment, we can come back to that if needed. Copy the WAN IP from the XR System Information page and enter that in the V Hub DMZ option - likely in Security Settings.

Re: Netgear Nighthawk XR500 GAMING ROUTER settings for IPTV sports streaming

Thank you again. I have disabled DumaOS Classified Games in Traffic Prioritization as instructed. I have also tried to copy & paste the WAN info in the superhub dmz before but on the page, under advanced setting, for some reason the available options are limited compared to before I connected my XR and there was definitely no dmz.

Re: Netgear Nighthawk XR500 GAMING ROUTER settings for IPTV sports streaming

Could you provide a screenshot of your Superhub interface please? Did you disable modem mode first as you'll need to do that, otherwise some options may not be available.

Re: Netgear Nighthawk XR500 GAMING ROUTER settings for IPTV sports streaming

Haaa right, no I didnt disable modem mode.
I will do that now and try it again.
Sorry pls, another question, how does using the dmz on the superhub help with the issue and are there any security issues with doing it like this?

Re: Netgear Nighthawk XR500 GAMING ROUTER settings for IPTV sports streaming

In my experience the modem mode on the hub was a little unstable, causing high pings etc, DMZ was more stable. Having it as stable as possible for QoS to then control will be better. It's safe, the XR has its own firewall.

Re: Netgear Nighthawk XR500 GAMING ROUTER settings for IPTV sports streaming

Thanks again. Ok, let me double check..so change my hub back to router mode, paste the XR WAN IP in the DMZ on the hub and leave it like that. I dont change my hub back to Modem mode?

Great. Done now. Is there anything else you suggest i do or just monitor for now and see if these changes make any difference?

Re: Netgear Nighthawk XR500 GAMING ROUTER settings for IPTV sports streaming

Just monitor that now, set Congestion Control to 70% for download and upload while set to Always and see how you get on
