Router and switch connections

I use a XR1000 router and a GS108v4 unmanaged switch, and I'd like to know if I can (without problems) and should (would get speed/routing benefits) connect them using more than one Cat6 Ethernet cables.
They're currently connected using one single cable between LAN ports, but I've got three ports that could be used.
It seems like using more then one cable might cause loops or flooding, etc. which would be bad.

I've read about a "packet storm" which is caused by a loop which is exactly what I believe would happen if I connect a router and a unmanaged (dumb) switch together using more than one cable.
