XR1000 Packet Loss while gaming

Hello,

I recently bought this router so I could connect to lower ping servers from my area, Ohio. My current internet speeds are 400 mbps Down and 20 mbps Up. I'm still learning all of the QoS functions and experimenting with it. My current Congestion Control settings are 70/70. Bandwith allocation - Devices: I put my Custom Gaming PC to 63 Up and Down and I also have Excess bandwith sharing enabled. In Traffic Prioritization, I turned off DumaOS Gaming and put in my own Ports for Warzone. Source being default of 1-65535 while I set my destinations to 3074 TCP/UDP and so on. It seems only the 3074 port gets priority which is great, I'm not too worried about the other UDP ports but have them listed just incase. I do notice, 3074 ports are not always lighting up red and I'm not too sure if they are supposed to stay red or turn off and on like it's doing. I do leave the priority for those packets left on 24/7. During my game, I get packet loss anywhere from 5% to 95%. My previous router was a Nighthawk R8000 and I did not enable QoS. I also did not have packet loss ever until I had this router. I love this product, I love the interface, I'm okay with slow interface loading (I understand its in development). I love all the tools and network control. I just need help understanding if I have something set up incorrectly. I have tried turning off QoS one time and I still got 95% packet loss and turned QoS back on. I only tested it one time with QoS off. I have done multiple hard resets and interface resets for the router and hard resets on the network as a whole. I have done multiple network tests and I have 0 packet loss until I start gaming.

Thank you to anyone who can help! @Netduma-Fraser

Re: XR1000 Packet Loss while gaming

Okay that's good, the router doesn't appear to be reporting any packet loss so it could be the server itself. When you notice the packet loss, try forcing a different server with the Geo-Filter and see if it disappears.

Re: XR1000 Packet Loss while gaming

Thanks for all the info, that's great!

Could you first play a couple games with QoS fully disabled from the three-line menu in Congestion Control and see if you get any packet loss.

Could you then please re-enable QoS but disable your custom rules in Traffic Prioritisation and enable DumaOS classified games, then monitor these results.

Let me know how the two tests differ and hopefully that will indicate where the issue is coming from.

Thanks!

Re: XR1000 Packet Loss while gaming

Hello, Liam.

Currently still testing things. So far, I started with direct connection to modem. No issues. I reconnected to router with and without QoS and I was still getting some packet loss (In traffic Prioritization, I switched off my ports and used Duma Classified and still had 95% loss) I decided to factory reset router and go through all the steps. I started off by turning off QoS, NAT Filter to Open, Auto Config/ Dectect IPv6, UPnP On. So far with no QoS, I have no issues. I'm gonna play a little bit longer with no QoS. Soon I will turn it on and use Duma Classified traffic with Congestion set to Never. Then use Auto Enable. I'll keep you updated with the results.

OK, interesting so far. Thanks for the update, let us know your results when done and we can look into it further!

Re: XR1000 Packet Loss while gaming

Okay so I just got 95% loss with no QoS. I checked my router logs and I'm getting DoS attacks from many different IP's (Fraggle) I checked a few forums and it seems this is very common with Netgear routers and users are unable to know if these are false positives or real. I also found many users disable Port Scan and DoS Protection on these routers. Any suggestions? If DoS is causing this, I highly doubt QoS and traffic prioritization was the cause.

Re: XR1000 Packet Loss while gaming

It's unlikely they are causing the issues as they are very common, though if it is happening consistently all the time it could be. What is the model of your modem that the XR is connected to?

Re: XR1000 Packet Loss while gaming

The reason I say this is because when my game hits that high packet loss, the router logs it at that exact time. Now, the logs have consistant DoS attacks. The modem is provided by Spectrum. Model EN2251 DOCSIS 3.1.

Re: XR1000 Packet Loss while gaming

Could be a coincidence, lets put a pin in that for the moment. On the router, on the System Information page do you see any unprioritized packets or is it 0 for received/transmitted?

It is 0 for both.

Re: XR1000 Packet Loss while gaming

That is a wonderful idea. I do have a question about QoS. If I have 5 devices and 2 of them play call of duty. How does the DumaOS classified prioritize packets to both devices without making eachother lag or slow eachother down? Also, if I have 5 devices and 2 needs the bandwidth, would it be better to use the flower or leave it at default with the "share excess bandwidth". I'll mark that as the solution as thats what makes sense after explaining the 0 unprioritized.

Re: XR1000 Packet Loss while gaming

So the bandwidth used by gaming is very little so they won't cause each other problems and both can be put ahead of the network queue to avoid the other devices streaming etc from causing problems. I usually suggest leaving Bandwidth Allocation at the default as allocating bandwidth in this case wouldn't necessarily alleviate any lag. Great to hear that!

Re: XR1000 Packet Loss while gaming

Hey Team, I hate to revive a solved thread. So I am using Ping Plotter and notice when I am using the router, every so often I get packet loss still. When I plug into modem directly, ping plotter picks up no issues. When I used the router, at first i was experiencing PL every 10 mins. It still happens but not at every 10 mins. When I do get PL, my router connection status all reset to 0 except lease time. When I play call of duty, i see a red bar on 2nd hop and carries all the way down to destination which in my case was pingplotter.com but i find this to be strange because I'm not getting PL when im directly into modem. My WAN time resets and my logs say "Internet connected" with a time sync after. Could this be a firmware issue with netgear?

Re: XR1000 Packet Loss while gaming

Update: My router is now reporting 8 to 20% PL and stops there on ping plotter. Honestly, I'm sort of confused on what steps to take to help figure out the issue cause once I think its one thing, its the other and it goes back and forth lol.

Could you provide a screenshot of the PingPlotter results showing you have packet loss please? Show the whole application, including the bottom graph as that's most important.

Re: XR1000 Packet Loss while gaming

Okay, you will see most of it is coming from router. Sometimes, I'll have 0 at the router and it'll start at hop 2 and carry down. Note: with COD servers, they wont allow you to ping their servers so it will always say 100% loss.

Re: XR1000 Packet Loss while gaming

The packet loss shown on the hops don't matter, it's the packet loss shown on the bottom graph that is the mean thing but as you can't ping game servers effectively it's not as useful. Can you run a plot to a local news website or Google (8.8.8.8) and then provide a screenshot of those results please?

Yes, I have Monday off work so I will definitely do this. I may need to start a new thread for this but is XR1000 still having issues with Open NAT with multiple devices because it's definitely affecting me.

Let's get this one sorted, then we can move on to that, if it's what I think then I can potentially provide something for that.
