One OPenVPN config does translate to just a single active OpenVPN session - users expect more, like say a US based VPN provider for Netflix, one on a non-government controlled off-shore whatever service for the P2P hide-my-a**, ... That is what would make it truly hybrid.
That's down to VPN providers, we just provide a client that allows you to apply the VPN to specific devices/services so not everything connected to the router has to be VPN'd

There is nothing that stops Netduma from allowing multiple concurrent active VPN sessions to different providers or locations, and allow policy routing to different destinations.

Some of your resp. Netgear customers request all traffic VPNed - they even like to see an Internet kill-switch if the VPN service is not active.
That has never been something requested from us, to allow multiple providers to be connected at once or even multiple locations. I don't think this is a use case for most people.
The kill switch is there currently. We'll likely add the ability to VPN all devices as well in the future but can still be done if all devices are added.
There is a limitation when using the router, that is why the VPN Hybrid is available so you can apply it to only certain applications/services and then every other device/every other application/service on the device can run through the normal connection.

Unless that is done by firewall or IPtables your protection is imaginary. There will be packet leakage. Also vpn use is a matter of discipline no matter what your purpose - as there are many.
the expressVPN and iVPN OS clients do this well. Poorly done by TorGuard and most others with silliness like 'disable network interface' or 'routing to 0.0.0.0 initiated by script'
expressVPN employs an OpenSource client that is well maintained.

For Express VPN or other VPN services is it better to enable the Hybrid-VPN kill switch or the killswitch through Tumelblick instead? My focus would be the more secure and reliable option.
I would suggest the Hybrid VPN kill switch as I'm not familiar with the Tumelblick option. If you're using the Hybrid VPN then I'm not sure how selecting the option elsewhere would work.
