XR500 DHCP issue

I've had this router for 4 months now and it works fine most of the time. Once in a while I'll notice that some LAN devices become unresponsive, when I look into the issue it turns out that they have IPs issued by my ISP's DHCP servers. Rebooting the router solves the problem. My WAN connection utilizes DHCP, but I can't figure out why local devices within the NAT would be getting IPs from an external DHCP rather than from the router all of a sudden.

Anyone else run into a similar problem?

Re: XR500 DHCP issue

Hi - I would recommend giving the XR500 a static WAN IP on the modem if it has the option to and see if that fixes your problem.

Re: XR500 DHCP issue

Why would the WAN interface DHCP setting affect LAN interfaces? This sounds like it's a software issue with DumaOS if that's the case.

Re: XR500 DHCP issue

Hi Spark and Cobra, this is due to a console being in standby/instant on mode and potentially automatically downloading updates. We brought out a fix which worked for some users but not all. So we're still investigating. However, if you disable Instant On mode on the Xbox or fully power off the PS4 when finished gaming does this resolve your issue?

Frasher
Sorry took so long to respond back I had to make a new account for the community forum as it wouldn’t let me log in with my other one. Anyways any wired device I have Xbox, Apple TV etc all drops dhcp once I reset good to go. Now anything Wireless is perfectly fine.

Re: XR500 DHCP issue

Okay so just to clarify, your wired devices disconnect from the internet even after disabling Instant Onmode on the Xbox and disabling automatic updates? Once you do a factory reset then the wired devices are able to access the internet? How long until they disconnect again? Your wireless devices however never lose connection?

Can you give your wired devices static IP addresses/reserved IPs please and see if that resolves the situation.

Re: XR500 DHCP issue

Correct wireless device DO NOT lose connection at all. Factory reset/hard reset(on the Xbox’s) do not work for Xbox, also mycloud which is wired drops connection same as Apple TV. When I get home I’ll put the consoles to static IP.

Currently what I do to fix the issue is just unplug router 30seconds plug back in and good for the rest of the night. Work during the day so I don’t have a good time frame on how long it is good for.

Sorry I’m terrible at explaining anything when I have to type.

Re: XR500 DHCP issue

Update: Factory reset router no static IP set and everyone has internet again but that puts me back to square one and having just to reboot everyday. I think this router is about to go back to Best Buy

Re: XR500 DHCP issue

I'm not sure why your issue is so frequent, if you unplug the xbox completely from the router for a day does it resolve the issue (realise thats not a solution just trying to narrow down the cause)

Re: XR500 DHCP issue

No because it’s not just the Xbox’s that do this as anything wired does this. Also when I set/reserved static IP it was fine 12hrs or so later when everyone gets home work and school lol no internet even wireless. Hooked my laptop direct to modem and was perfect. So I did the factory reset on router no static set this time and everyone was able to connect again. I did reboot router several times before factory reset on the router. I do appreciate your help this one has me puzzled.

Re: XR500 DHCP issue

Has anyone changed the default DHCP IP address pool to 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.200? Save settings and reboot everything.

Something I've always done with NG routers is to change the pool to something smaller. This also allows for static IP addresses to be used ON devices on either side of the smaller pool. I don't see any DHCP issues on my XR450 with this configuration.

Re: XR500 DHCP issue

Yes I know but it is the console that causes the disconnects for other devices, so if you could try that and see if it resolves it for all other devices please

Re: XR500 DHCP issue

Okay so should I add static IP to them all again and disconnect Xbox at night? Or should I just change the power on and off setting on the Xbox. Thanks

Re: XR500 DHCP issue

If that works I hope this is just a temporary fix until a new update comes out for the router. The nice thing about instant ON on a console is it updates for you so when you do play it’s already updated

Re: XR500 DHCP issue

I would just put the Xbox in Energy Saving, thats the easiest option. No need for Static IPs. Yeah totally understand, they're looking into it currently so its just a workaround

Re: XR500 DHCP issue

Update it’s been 1 week no issues until late last night no one had internet again. All consoles are on power saving mode. Even the wireless devices didn’t have service this time. Netgear has yet put out a fix for this and claim this is a gaming router unfortunately I will be taking mine back tonight not sure what I’m going to get but I’m not going to reset a router ever x amount of hours to have internet.

Re: XR500 DHCP issue

That sounds like a different issue then. Did you notice anything in the System Information logs at this time that could be helpful? Other routers have this issue as well, you can find others online, it's not exclusive to the router. Sorry to hear that.

Is there any update on this issue as I returned my old XR500 and want to get a new one but not before this issue is resolved
