Good advice above, I think your only move here is to go ahead and do a factory reset

Re: XR500 Security

are you able to log into the router? if so, you can change them from within the interface.

If not and you're getting asked them to recover the password, then you'd need to factory reset to get back in and reset those questions.

Re: XR500 Security

While many questions about routers are generic and could be answered anywhere, some things need specialist knowledge.

You might get more help, and find earlier questions and answers specific to your device, in the appropriate section for your hardware. That's probably here:

Nighthawk Pro Gaming Routers - NETGEAR Communities

Gaming routers have their own DumaOS operating system that is nothing like the one on Netgear's standard routers.

You might like to search there for messages related to your problem.

In the meantime you could visit the support pages:

Support | NETGEAR

Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware. Look at the label on the device for the model number.

Check for various troubleshooting tips.

You may have done this already. I can't tell from your message.

I mention it because Netgear stopped supplying printed manuals and CD versions some years ago and people sometimes miss the downloads.

No luck it brings me to password reset. When I enter my security questions it does not recognize them

Did you ever provide answers to those questions?

If you are trying to use the "password recovery" option, there is a bug in Netgear's implementation of password recovery on some devices. You can get locked into a closed loop.

If password recovery is enabled, but you have not set the answers to the questions, it keeps sending you back to the beginning of the process. If you haven't already given the thing your personal answers, they are not in its memory and it has no way of knowing if they are correct.

If the standard factory password (password) does not work, then you will have to factory reset the thing to get back to that. Then either disable password recovery (check the manual for your device) or provide some answers to those questions.

Re: XR500 Security

The odd thing about all this is I was able to update my router using my phone app. Is there anyway I can back up my home network before doing a factory reset. I probably have at least 15 devices hooked up and the thought of having to reset all of them is daunting.

Yes if you can access the browser graphical user interface (GUI).

If you can't, then the answer is no.

Next time you set the thing up, first create a backup.

Re: XR500 Security

Yes lesson learned. The security passwords should have worked and I know they are correct as I had them written down. Oh well thanks everyone for your help

Re: XR500 Security

Be sure to save off a back up configuration to file for safe keeping. Saves time if a reset is needed.
