XR500 - UPnP / DHCP renewal issue?

Hi there,

Been having an issue for the last couple of weeks where my internet is being dropped for a few minutes, usually on the back of a DHCP lease renewal. I don't always need to power cycle the router, but it's enough to kick me from video calls / online games (with the latter being more important and frustrating haha).

My set up is Fiber / Cable Modem > XR500, although from what I can tell by the logs, I think the culprit is my work laptop which has a wired connection (via a dock), and has a reserved IP through the LAN settings.

Historically, I have had the same DHCP issue as others here, but this issue seems new, and has coincided with a new message spamming my logs. Here are a few examples below.

I've also noticed some issues with the work laptop on programs like MS team (i.e. video conferencing calls videos / sharing not working) - so I'm not sure if that might be a related symptom or indicative of a cause.

Re: XR500 - UPnP / DHCP renewal issue?

Sorry to hear this!

Could you please let us know what firmware version you're currently running? This issue appears to be less prominent with the new beta verisons of our firmware.

Do you notice any disconnections when your laptop is not connected at all, or does this only seem to occur when the laptop is actively using the internet?

Re: XR500 - UPnP / DHCP renewal issue?

Hey Liam - thanks forgetting back to me.

I’m on the latest - the .114 firmware.

I feel the problem child is the laptop, because I haven’t seen the Upnp log before. But there are a few other devices that seem to be problematic with the DHCP renewal.

It’s probably a separate issue- and not related ti the DHCP stuff, but do you know of any router setting that could be problematic with corporate firewalls? I wonder if that’s causing the UPnP log (I’ve reset the laptop and power cycled the router and I’m still seeing the same issue).

Re: XR500 - UPnP / DHCP renewal issue?

The reserved IPs you've made, I would suggest for DHCP you change the starting IP address so this is after the IPs you've set as reserved. For example, if you've set a few devices as reserved ending with .5 - .15 then set the starting IP at .16. That way when the DHCP lease renews it should completely ignore the IPs you've set and hopefully prevent the issue occurring.

You could try disabling QoS fully in the Congestion Control menu and see whether that makes any difference.

Re: XR500 - UPnP / DHCP renewal issue?

Thanks Fraser - I'll try re-jigging the IPs as suggested and see if that helps. Was the QoS suggestion a troubleshoot for the renewals as well, or was that in relation to the UPnP?

Re: the UPnP issue - that log entry has now disappeared. My employer has opened up the firewall for most applications, meaning we dont need to VPN in - so I wasn't. When I connected with the VPN to access the applications we can't access without it - the UPnP log disappeared - and so did my issues with Teams / video conferencing (regardless of whether I am connected to the VPN).

You might have a better idea of why this might of worked than I!

I still haven't been able to crack why my wifes corporate laptop / firewall doesn't like our network - had to set up another router for her to use. You guys are a ****load more responsive and helpful than Microsoft!

Re: XR500 - UPnP / DHCP renewal issue?

I'm on the latest Beta version of the firmware and i get this exact same issue. I have posted on the Netduma forum aswell and its been logged with NG to release a new firmware to resolve this issue.

Every single time the DHCP renews - the internet will drop and for me the only thing that brings it back is turn off and back on again. Its very frustating, Especially when DHCP is one of the main features a router does and there cant even get that to work on this router. I have had sooooo many problems with this router its unbelievable. if it was not for the Netduma software i would be long gone. I'm going to give NG another month and if the issue has not been resolved then i will be buying a new router.

Re: XR500 - UPnP / DHCP renewal issue?

Sorry to hear that, there were some changes in the latest beta firmware that some users have reported to resolve this issue. Could you pleaes confirm that you performed a factory reset and upgrading to the latest beta firmware?

Re: XR500 - UPnP / DHCP renewal issue?

@Kellogs QoS suggestion was for the MS teams/VPN issue you mentioned. Ahh brilliant to hear that! Probably because it's easier to route now. See if the QoS being disabled fully helps with your wifes issue. Thanks!
@dialatech2303 please try the suggestion I made above with the reserved IPs/changing of the pool as this is something new I've though of that could help.
