XR700 Constant Issues with DHCP

Running the latest Firmware with the hotfix and still having issues with this router. It refuses to give out IP addresses after a reboot. Devices cant connect due to no IP given. If I set one static it works fine. Otherwise its not happening. Not what you would expect from a $500 Router. Any ideas?

Ive tried factory resetting, updating and downgrading FW multiple times. Got a replacement and tried it...same issues. Not much more I can think of other than IP reservations for every device or static IPs on everything.

Also...if I set up a new Wifi network then reconnect all my devices...it works...but as soon as I reboot. Only a few can reconnect.

Could you provide a screenshot of your LAN Settings page please? Something very odd is going on there.

Re: XR700 Constant Issues with DHCP

It seems after the lease is up things start to connect again...but it takes soo long for them to get back on the network.

Last night I could not play PS4 at all or hear anyone on the chat. I tried turning off Geo, and QoS with no luck....however it could have been psn.

Gonna give it a few days running and see how that goes. Worked good today and gaming was good today...however I did not try a reboot or anything. I will try that tomorrow and see how it reacts.

All looks fine in LAN Settings, could you got to http://192.168.1.1/debug.htm and try disabling 11k please and see if it works better after that please.

Re: XR700 Constant Issues with DHCP

Seems it's been removed. Instead could you attach a USB to the router, enable Start debug log capture on startup, as well as enable LAN/WAN capture, change the store location to USB and click start capture. Also enable hostapd debug and then hopefully if it happens again we can grab the files from the USB and take a look. Before you do all that though do a factory reset using the button in the back of the router, hold it down for 30 seconds, then release and wait 1 - 2 minutes before accessing again.

Re: XR700 Constant Issues with DHCP

Same issues - just bought the xr700 - updated firmware to least ( ... .20 I think) - worked great for about a couple hours, then only 10 or so devices would connect, several that had IPs before no longer could get them.

In the meantime, I've had to pull out an old Linksys WRT1200AC to get devices to work correctly again.

Re: XR700 Constant Issues with DHCP

Sorry to hear that, try updating to this firmware and then doing a reset afterwards to ensure there are no legacy issues carried over and see if you get the same issues https://kb.netgear.com/000061714/XR700-Firmware-Version-1-0-1-24-Hot-Fix

Re: XR700 Constant Issues with DHCP

I am having the same issue.  Netgear actually sent me another XR700 yesterday.  I installed it, updated it to the current version, and it is now beginning to fail.  Symptoms before failure:

  1. Device Manager / R-App will not load.  (this is probably why you see so many people posting about the initial symptom instead of the root problem, DHCP / DNS Server on the XR700):
    XR700 r-apps not loading
    XR700 R-app not loading.
    ETC...
...Or my generic one... XR700 and DUMAOS Limited Functionality
  2. If you go to LAN Setup and act like you are going to ADD a new reservation by clicking the ADD button, you may start to see the same Device Name repeated for different MAC Addresses
  3. Eventually, the router stops handing out IP addresses like it is all full - or confused about which devices are which.

The only workaround is to set it as an access point and wait for Netduma to fix this.

Note:  Also, do not listen to people on these forums that do not have an XR700.

Re: XR700 Constant Issues with DHCP

@Retired_Member  - helpful; thanks for this - you're describing some of the other symptoms perfectly (I had one device / mac address the NetDuma has assigned SEVEN IPs to) - still running the Linksys WRT1200AC in the meantime, but I would really love to use my XR700 - if for nothing else the extra anntenas === way better range and connection for devices (when it worked).

Re: XR700 Constant Issues with DHCP

@Netduma-Fraser

.24 solves nothing.  It does not change the problem with DumaOS:  DHCP / DNS Server is broken, causing R-App(s) and Device Manager to not load as well.

When you actually fix this issue, let me know and I may try to take it out of Access Point mode.  Either way, a lot of $$$ spent for just an access point or an inoperable router.

Everything in Settings is Netgear, we've already made them aware but if you're still in contact with them let them know you're still encountering the issues.

Re: XR700 Constant Issues with DHCP

@Netduma-Fraser

Netgear support feigned ignorance as to what you are saying and wanted to collect more information to send to engineers that I cannot talk to directly.  They have no clue how many have returned this router they say.  They also say they are not getting many calls about this router.  I think the agent is misinformed or trying to mislead.  Netduma blames Netgear --> Netgear states they need more info --> Netgear says they have all the info they need, and that they will send a new XR700 --> Netgear sends you "new" XR700 without latest firmware (that way you know they tested it with the latest firmware before sending, right?)  --> Same issues arise --> Netgear states they cannot give you a refund, Amazon or wherever you purchased the router has to do that --> Netgear states they cannot give you a newer model, as it is not their policy (What is their recall policy?  This thing should be recalled!) --> Netgear states they need more info (logs and more) before they escalate your case to an engineer -->  WHEN THIS ROUTER FAILS YOU CANNOT ACCESS IT - IF YOU DO NOT HAVE YOUR LOGS BEING OFFLOADED, HOW WILL ANYONE EVER GET THE INFO THEY NEED?!  I pretend to be a sheep on that last statement that just follows the herd, believing that Netgear and Netduma do not know what is going on with this $400 box of ______.

I was able to telnet into the router and run:

tail -f -s 10 /var/log/log-message

I think when this log file is rotated, the tail -f stops reading.  tail -F solves this read after log rotation issue in Linux, but it appears that option is not available in BusyBox.  Was wondering if this portion of the output I am getting from /var/log/log-message means anything?:

Re: XR700 Constant Issues with DHCP

I think an endless while loop on the command line may be a workaround for the log file being deleted/recreated (you may get some duplicate info - but at least it is not cutting you off when the log file is cleared/deleted):

Re: XR700 Constant Issues with DHCP

Sorry to hear that but thank you very much for that information, I will pass it onto our team to look at. I'd suggest signing up for the DumaOS beta so you can get into it sooner and you can then let us know if it is still an issue http://www.netgearinnovation.com/dumaos-beta/index.html

Re: XR700 Constant Issues with DHCP

I wrote about this same issue on another post. I would like this fixed cause restarting the router is now slot of work. The work around for me is to turn off as many wifi devices that connect to the router after a reboot. I have over 50 plus devices connected at one time with router. I turn on devices one by one after waiting 10 mins after a full reboot. I think the router can't handle all these devices connecting all at once to the router. It bugs out and quits assigning ip addresses and only allows 5 to 10 devices and it stays that way for a while. Only way I can get it to work is to have all phones/smart devices/cameras unplugged or airplane mode then restart the router and wait for some devices to connect then plug in the other devices it won't overwhelm the router and everything connects only until power goes out or a restart of the router is needed then you got to do it all again.

Please Netgear fix this issue

Re: XR700 Constant Issues with DHCP

Make sure you sign up for the beta but meanwhile probably what would be easier for you is to disable the DHCP server completely and assign static/reserved IPs to the devices, that should then prevent the issue and stop you having to do that whole process.

Re: XR700 Constant Issues with DHCP

XR500 beta has started, XR700 beta will start later. How much later? Can't say right now, but it will be our next priority, then the XR300.

Re: XR700 Constant Issues with DHCP

@Netduma_Alex & @Netduma-Fraser, can you tell me why you are not focused on current break/fix/security issues and instead offering people a utopian 3.0 further down the road when you get around to it?

Re: XR700 Constant Issues with DHCP

It's not a issue with our side of the software so I can't answer that unfortunately. A Netgear developer has already said in the beta forum that they have found the cause and will have a fix in one of the next beta builds - why it is that they are putting it into 3.0 solely I don't know.
