VLAN forwarding / passthrough

My ISP Fiber Optic modem has 3 different port with different VLAN tags:

VLAN400 for voice

VLAN500 for internet

VLAN600 for IPTV

First of all, I dont care about the voice service .

Currently I have a Ethernet cable attached directly from the VLAN500 port to my wireless router in the middle of my house for maximum wifi coverage.

I also have another Ethernet cable attached directly from VLAN600 to another end of my house where the TV resides in the living room for IPTV.

Both these cable are nicely concealed inside the wall during renovation last year.

Now i realize i would like wired connection for gadgets around my TV too (e.g. PS4, nVidia Shield, TV for Netflix, Netgear Arlo base station etc).

My thought is to purchase two of these S8000 switch, 1 placed next to fiber optic modem, 2nd placed next to current IPTV set top box.

1st S8000 placed next to my Fiber optic modem:

Fiber modem VLAN500 -> S8000 port1

Fiber modem VLAN600 -> S8000 port2

S8000 port3 -> Wireless router through concealed ethernet cable

S8000 port4 -> Living room 2nd S8000 Port1

2nd S8000 next to IPTV set top box 

S8000 port1 -> IPTV set top box

S8000 port2 -> PS4

S8000 port3 -> nvidia Shield

S8000 port4 -> Netgear Arlo base station

so on and so forth.

Does the network traffic knows where they are supposed to go? Does the switch strip the traffic off their VLAN ID?

Ultimately, passing through the first S8000, does my wireles router gets the VLAN500 internet traffic?

Does my gadgets attached to 2nd S8000 gets the routed traffic passsed back from the wireless router?

Does my IPTV set top box gets the VLAN600 IPTV traffics?

Please advise.

The switch will only work as a port-based VLAN and it cannot split 3 VLANs on 1 S8000. 

This setup that you have will not work:

1) Optical Modem Port1 (VLAN500) -> 1st S8000 Port1

2) Optical Modem Port2 (VLAN600) -> 1st S8000 Port2 (The switch doesn't recognize any VLAN IDs, It will only have a conflict)

It should be like this: 

1) Optical Modem Port 1(VLAN 500) -> 1st S8000 Port 1

2) Optical Modem Port 2 (VLAN600) -> 2nd S8000 Port 1

You cannot connect multiple VLANs on the S8000 as it doesn't recognize any VLAN configuration. This is just a passthru switch. The setup that you want will work on Prosafe Plus Switches or Smart Managed Switches as they are VLAN aware units and you can Tag or Untag any port on this switches.

Welcome to our community!

As I checked the manual of the S8000/GS808E, this switch does not support any VLAN or 802.1q. This can only work as a passthru switch but it can handle QOS and Link aggregation. If you wanted a switch that can support VLAN, please try to check our Prosafe Plus switches.

Hi John,

I dont need a managed switch to create VLAN ID for me.

What's going on is my ISP by default has two sets of different VLAN ID tag for the traffic, one for IPTV and one for Internet.

I just need to know if the S8000 switch would pass along the VLAN ID or would it strip the VLAN tag off the packet like cheap switches from other brand does.

Any non-vlan aware switch will do on your network if the VLANs that you have coming from the modem/router are set as port-based. Does the VLANs that you have will be coming only from one port? or is it set to 1 VLAN per port? S8000 will work if it is 1 VLAN per port and it cannot accept any tagged traffic, you may need a VLAN aware/managed switch for that.

On this setup, We have 2 switches connected directly to a port-based VLAN and the S8000 can support it.

e.g.

Port 1 - VLAN 1 (Data) to Switch 1

Port 2 - VLAN 2 (Voice) to Switch 2

Hi John,

I believe it is 1 VLAN per port. E.g. the Huawei branded Optical Modem has port hard fixed as:

Port1 = Internet (VLAN500)

Port2 = Voice (VLAN400)

Port4 = IPTV (VLAN600)

So if i understanding correctly what you're saying, in this setup if i connect:

1) Optical Modem Port1 (VLAN500) -> 1st S8000 Port1

2) Optical Modem Port2 (VLAN600) -> 1st S8000 Port2

3) 1st S8000 Port3 -> Wireless Router WAN port

4) Wireless Router LAN port -> 1st S8000 Port4

5) 1st S8000 Port5 -> 2nd S8000 Port 1 (I believe this daisy chain is called trunking, sorry not a network expert here)

6) 2nd S8000 Port2 -> IPTB Set top box

Question about this odd setup is:

a) in step no. 3) the wireless router would be able to correctly comminicate in VLAN500 traffic using Router WAN port <-> 1st S8000 Port3 <-> 1st S8000 Port1 to make PPPoE dialing and transmit internet traffic 

b) In step no.5) both internet traffic routed by the router and also VLAN600 traffic will be piped through single ethernet cable and then redistribute again at 2nd S8000. Will this work?

c) In step no.6) the IPTV Set Top Box will be able to correctly receives VLAN600 traffic and work?

d) in all of the above operation, both S8000 will not strip off VLAN tag and make the setup goes haywire?
