Rax120 Nighthawk

Home network connection/setup doesn't work.

1) Router 1 (10Gbit/s capability, fiber-connected, XGS-PON technology):

-incoming fiber connection at 10 Gbit/s works

-WLAN works

-10Gbit ethernet port works

-Cable 1 (cat 7 ethernet) connection (from Router 1 to Switch) works

2) Switch (Netgear GS110MX):

-Cable 1 (cat 7 ethernet) plugged into port 9 (10G/Multi-Gig) works (two green lights blinking)

-Cable 2 (cat 7 ethernet) plugged into port 10 (10G/Multi-Gig) no lights blinking

-Cable 2 (cat 7 ethernet) plugged into home network cabling (cat 6e ethernet)

3) Router 2 (Netgear RAX120 Nighthawk) used as Access Point:

-Cable 3 (cat 6e ethernet) plugged into home network cabling (cat 6e ethernet) wall socket

-Cable 3 (cat 6e ethernet) plugged into port Multi-Gig (5G/2,5G/1G capable) no LED light blinking on Router

Question:

Why can't I connect GS110MX (10G/Multi-Gig) port via home network cabling to RAX120 (5G/2.5G/1G/Multi-Gig) port?

Connection 1G/Port at GS110MX via home network cabling to 1G/Port at RAX120 works (one green light blinking, only 100MB/s throughput?)...

Can somebody help, how I can at least get 5G/s from Router 1 via Switch and home network cable to Router 2?

Reads like your installation is not properly set-up (for pairs/eight strands, correctly wired) for Gigabit and MultiGig. Only 100 Mbit/s negotiated  indicates that only two pairs are workable (or the cable isn't made for Ethernet at all, e.g. telephone cabling). And the Multi-Gig ports don't go down to Fast Ethernet.

Just curious - Salt/Switzerland?

Re: Rax120 Nighthawk

Cables are surely Ethernet.

„And the Multi-Gig ports don't go down to Fast Ethernet.“

Can you specify what this means?

Yes, Salt/Switzerland.

Re: Rax120 Nighthawk

Blame me - both the GS110EMX and the RAX120 Multi-Gig port are "5-speed" so Fast Ethernet should be possible.

But still, if the supposed GbE link does negotiate to Fast Ethernet only ... something is potentially wrong with the cable installation. Was this installation intended for Ethernet, is the cable at least CAT5E or CAT6, or is this a former Telephone installation on T72 (the ol'Swiss PTT standard) wires?

Re: Rax120 Nighthawk

Thanks Kurt.
Cables are surely cat5e or higher (not Tel)...

Re: Rax120 Nighthawk

Have no cable tester at hand I guess.... so check the connectors on both ends at least.

Re: Rax120 Nighthawk

Hi Kurt, you were right! Checked the cabeling and it turned out that it was a cat5e cabeling where 4 pins were split for Internet and the other 4 pins were split for Telefone. Had it corrected (4 pins from Tel to Internet). Now they communicate, although not at maximum speed due to cat5e. Thanks for the thoughts and ideas. Best! Andy

Re: Rax120 Nighthawk

The classic cable saver tricks 8-) A clean CAT5E installation should allow the negotiation of 2.5 GbE, on shorter connections 5GbE often works even if this "formally" requires CAT6 ... however many better CAT5E cables reach and exceed the requirements of CAT6. A known Ethernet "killer" here in Switzerland are the POTS/ISDN RJ45 inserts with the screw terminals. You might have to replace the RJ45 wall plug inserts.

Re: Rax120 Nighthawk

realized that problem as well and have changed all relevant wall plug inserts. Thanks!
