Speed issues with RAX120 as AP

I have an internet connection of 1000Mbps download and 100Mbps upload. I use RAX120 as an ax AP for 4 ax clients, 2 phones (Samsung S10+,1x1 stream) and 2 laptops (AX200, 2x2 stream). The firmward was upgraded to the latest, V1.0.1.122 with 5G channel band fixed on 36 and 160MHz is on.

I run Speedtest.net app on same target server to test speeds and I have the following observation.

1. When RAX120 is powered on, Speedtest on S10+ will be 700Mbps (usually around 650Mbps) download, while on AX200 it is 950Mbps. Stable connection. Fast internet experience. Pretty much what I had expected.

2. However, when RAX120 is on for 2 hours, things will reverse. Speedtest on S10+ will be 930Mbps top, while on AX200 it is 700Mbps top (usually 650~670Mbps). Still stable connection and fast internet experience, but not what I had expected for sure.

3. I set up an external SSD (large file read and write IO both past 300MB/s) for ReadyShare to test the max speed of router to wireless clients. Upload from AX200 will top at 140MB/s, but download is just around 70MB/s. This performance will be the same no matter how long RAX120 is powered on.

4. There is an Enable 20/40 Mhz coexistence option under 2.4G configuration, and when I disable it (intending to unleash the top ax 2.4G speed), all clients will malfunction: S10+ can connect to 2.4G but speed test is only 50Mbps while both AX200 clients cannot connect at all. I had to enable this setting to let 2.4G work under ax. This issue persists regardless of power on time.

I find it quite unbelievable to see 900Mbps speedtest result from S10+ because it's just a 1x1 stream and it should just top at 700Mbps, isn't it? And for AX200, it was always over 900Mbps (connection speed at 2.4Gbps) within the first two hours since powering on the router, then it's just like a switch is turned, suddenly all AX200 can only top at 700Mbps (connection speed at 1.2Gbps), clearly running on 80Mhz.

Could anyone help explain this? Is it the local wireless interference causing this problem? Or configuration? temperature? or deven hardware defect? Thank you guys!

Re: Speed issues with RAX120 as AP

I’ve run into issues with faster upload than download on occasion as well.

As for the S10+ it has a 2x2 antenna (2 streams) not 1x1 so it results make sense to get that high.

Re: Speed issues with RAX120 as AP

Thank you for pointing out the mistake. I am quite misinformed here. Confirmed by Anandtech review, then entire Samsung S10 family utilized 2x2 stream for WiFi. However, further confusion happened when my wife brought home a new phone, Huawei P40 Pro, which definitely has 2x2 stream, and it always gets 930Mbps on Speedtest whether my S10+ stuck at 650Mbps or get boosted to 900Mbps (after a few hours' use). When AX200 can only get 700Mbps, P40 Pro still gets 930Mbps easily.

I did a factory reset today and am glad to see the 2.4G can function well in 40Mhz mode and AX200 can eventaully connect. And after 5 hours of use, it still has not switched on the "special mode", so my AX200 is still getting 930Mbps alongside the new P40 Pro while my S10+ getting only 630Mbps. I'd hope to find a way to get all 2x2 stream phones to reach the same WiFi performance.

Re: Speed issues with RAX120 as AP

I think I have solved one mystery.

Mystery:

Why does P40 Pro gets 930Mbps on the same WiFi while S10+ gets only 630Mbps? when both are equipped with 2x2 stream.

Explanation:

1. RAX120's 160Mhz was not steady before reset. At channel 36, it will downgrade to 80Mhz after a while, which was why I observed after a couple of hours' use, WiFi performance on clients had seen a big change. This did not happen in the 20 hours after factory reset.

2. S10+ official WiFi description:

Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax (2.4/5GHz),VHT80 MU-MIMO,1024QAM

Up to 1.2Gbps Download / Up to 1.2Gbps Upload

P40 Pro official WiFi description:

802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax, 2 x 2 MIMO, HE160, 1024 QAM, 8 Spatial-stream Sounding MU-MIMO
Download and upload peak physical rate up to 2.4Gbps

At 80Mhz, both S10+ and P40 Pro can reach 900+ Mbps on Speedtest, but at 160Mhz, P40 Pro can reach 930Mbps while S10+ peak at only 520Mbps.

3. AX200 speed issues:

I found that AX200 run well at 160Mhz, reaching 930Mbps easily on Speedtest, but at 80Mhz, it will peak at only 700Mbps. Rolling back old drivers helped solved this issue. I found that AX200 with driver version 21.20.0.5 can work normally at 80Mhz, peaking at 916Mbps.

The mystery unresolved:

ReadyShare still does not function as expected. Upload speed from AX clients (AX200) can easily surpass 100MB/s while download speed always top around 83MB/s. (The SSD connected to RAX120 can do 550MB/s read and 500MB/s write.) The performance is always like this regardless of factory reset, formating SSD again, using larger file (more than 10GB), running 5G at 80Mhz or 160Mhz, or switching Intel drivers for AX200.
