These two sentences are confusing. If nothing happened, then all should be fine.

Or do you mean:

"I tested it by unplugging the computer and I had no internet connection to my tablet."

How does the tablet connect to the Internet?

Can it see the wifi from the router?

Yes.

The router will continue to broadcast wifi. You can also plug other things into its Ethernet ports.

Other then the wired connection, there is nothing else going on between the computer and the router. Test it by unplugging the computer and seeing what happens.

Re: internet connection

I remain puzzled about what is going on.

You lose the Internet to what? Everything?

The wifi should still work, as long as the wifi clients are connecting to the wifi from the router and not something on the PC.

That is what you would expect. The router has to be turned on for anything to connect to the internet. But you should be able to turn of the PC and still see and use the wifi from the router.

Unless your computer is wired to something that turns off other things when it is disconnected.

Re: internet connection

Hello,If I pull the power cord to the computer I lose
the LAN port number three on the router and the tablet
says there is no internet connection..There are four ports on the router.
I use number three for internet connection.I now have to have the router on
so the computer can connect to the internet.

I'm completely lost here. Hard to see how a tablet depends on a wired connection to your router. Maybe there is some other hardware involved.

That's how networks work.Turn off the router and bang goes the internet connection.

The router is the bit that glues everything together.

The modem is just the first link in the chain. The router handles all the network connections.

There has never been any suggestion that you wanted to turn off the router rather than the PC.

Like I said, I'm completely lost here. But that's not new. I am often lost.

Re: internet connection

Just a shot in the dark here... I honestly am having a heck of a time following this...

If you check your tablet does it use the right SSID of your wireless for it's connectivity or is it somehow tied to the PC?

It should reflect the router SSID you set up.

Not just me then.

It may be a shot in the dark, but it is one of the few ideas that might make any sense in these circumstances.

One other shot in the dark is to ask about any other equipment on this network, especially stuff connected to the PC.

Re: internet connection

Hello,Thank you all for your help,
however I sent the tablet back to the seller.
But the computer won"t connect to the internet

unless the router is on.Must I change the wiring connections
to the router?Needless to say I'm a novice to all this.
Thank you.

Re: internet connection

I'm afraid, this saga keeps changing, and I have no idea what it going on here.

Take this bit:

Now you want to connect your computer to the Internet with the router turned off.

These are two completely different things.

Nothing will connect to the Internet with the router turned off.

I've said it before, but let's try again.

That's how networks work.Turn off the router and bang goes the internet connection. The router is the bit that glues everything together.

Let's put that another way, turn off the router and you turn off the Internet.

That is what the router is for. It is the internet.

You can turn off the computer and the Internet still works. You cannot turn off the router and get the Internet.

Do you have any friends who can help you out? We don't seem to be getting very far here.
