AT&T Fiber BGW210 + Netgear Nighthawk R7000 slow internet speeds in router mode, full speed in AP
I have gigabit internet with AT&T fiber with a BGW210 gateway. I have this set up with IP passthrough to my R7000 Nighthawk.
When I have the router set up in AP mode I have full speed using ethernet port Lan1 through my router (~1000Mbps using ethernet), but while in Router model I am significantly throttled down to ~150Mbps. I have verified in the Netgear statistics that the Lan1 ethernet port I'm using status is showing the full 1000M in both modes.
There are a few reasons I really want to keep the Nighthawk in router mode.
- I have 2x xboxes in my house and I can only get an open NAT with the router functionality from the Nighthawk. Port forwarding in the BGW210 does not work because that can only be done for one of the xboxes, so one is strict while the other is open.
- I have Philips Hue lights that seem to really not like the IP address provided by the BGW210. The lights do not function properly when using only the BGW210, and they don't work while the Nighthawk is in AP mode.
I've seen quite a few threads discussing this issue and everything points to turning QoS off. However, I have factory reset the Nighthawk and verified that the QoS has not been turned on in the process. To see what happened,
- I turned QoS on using the built in speed test to set the limits at 214Mbps. I ran the speed test on my wired connection again and got ~40Mbps.
- I set QoS using 1000Mbps limits. I ran the speed test on my wired connection again and got ~40Mbps.
- I turned QoS back off and ran a speed test on the wired connection. I got back to ~150Mbps.
So my questions are:
- Does anyone have any idea how I can improve my download speeds while using the router in router mode?
- Does anyone know of an aftermarket modem that I can use with my AT&T fiber (ethernet input, not coax)?

Re: AT&T Fiber BGW210 + Netgear Nighthawk R7000 slow internet speeds in router mode, full speed
It seems to point at the att device not functioning properly in passthrough mode.
One thing you can try.
Put the BGW210 in router mode.
and then put the netgears IP address into the BGW210's DMZ.
Leave the netgear in router mode.
You can disable the wifi on the BGW210.
This is forward all traffic to the netgear.
worth a shot.

Re: AT&T Fiber BGW210 + Netgear Nighthawk R7000 slow internet speeds in router mode, full speed
I believe the passthrough mode is working because if I plug an ethernet cable into the BGW210 it does not get internet, but it does when plugged in to the netgear. I could be simplifying that though.
Can you clarify setting the BGW210 in router mode? I couldn't find anything in the settings, I'm assuming because it's a gateway it's in router mode if the wifi is turned on.
As for the DMZ, I also couldn't find this online. It looks like some companies call it DMZ, others call it IP Passthrough, which is what i had set up.
I do see in the IP Passthrough settings that I have the allocation mode set to passthrough with DHCPS-fixed, selected the netgear mac address and set the DHCP lease time. This is what I read online for how to set up a separate router. However, there's another allocation mode - Default Server. This allows me to set a "Default Server Internal Address". When I put in the IP address of the router it says the network address must be on the network (192.168.x.x).
- Do you know if this could be another way to do IP passthrough, and if so what IP address I'd put there?

Re: AT&T Fiber BGW210 + Netgear Nighthawk R7000 slow internet speeds in router mode, full speed
I'm not the expert on the BGW210. Att/their forums would be. so in terms of what settings/ability to use it, you'd be best served by asking on their forums or calling their support. here's one article I found from them on DMZ
https://www.att.com/support/smallbusiness/article/smb-internet/KM1188700/
Any turning wifi on/off doesn't enable/disable passthrough mode. It simply turns wifi on/off.
And it hasn't been known to be that great of a combo device or even have a properly functioning passthrough mode. Its why one of our recommendations is to try the DMZ option or to simply leave it in router mode and put the netgear in access point mode.
