Stock FW comes from NG. Any 3rd party Fw comes from those that get the source FW Files from NG, then develop and add there own features and such, i.e. ExperssVPN, to the FW then they release it to the model that those 3rd party developers support there FW on. So there is NG Stock FW and 3rd Party FW.

Something to ask ExpressVPN about.
If the router is working as expected, don't fix it. 😉

ExpressVPN is its own firmware build. You'll use their firmware. And if you have issues, they'll need to address it as its 3rd party firmware.

Re: ExpressVPN R6700v3 AC1750 firmware and firmware
My question is, does the "box" use ONE set of firmware? I understand PC's and OS , vs s/w, but routers with VPN??!! Not.
Does the router have an O/S (firmware), then the VPN sits on top? or does the firmware run at lowest level (just above h/w) , so VPN "replaced" it?? ExpressVPN is not great on replies, and Netgear wants me to ante up for these few questions...
Thx

TY!!!
The "support" person (chat) at ExpressVPN said, yeah, after you upgrade our firmware, you should upgrade your NetGear firmware, as they're always doing good stuff in there...
WOW.
Good explanation @FURRYe38 . Thanks!
