External HDD that worked with WNDR3400 is not recognized by R7500

I just bought a Nighthawk X4 to upgrade from a WNDR3400. The external HDD (USB 3.0, unpartitioned, NTFS) that worked with the WNDR3400 is not recognized by the Nighthawk (HDD powers up, but that's it). The USB ports on the Nighthawk do work and recognize when I plug in a thumbdrive, though. Before I go buy a new external drive, I wanted to see if anybody has any suggestions to make it work.
Thanks!

Hi @mrjaype,
Welcome to the community!
Have you tried reloading the latest firmware? After reloading the firmware, I suggest that you hard reset. Resetting the router will restore its configuration to default therefore it requires reconfiguration. By the way, what's the system file format of your thumb drive?
Let us know the result.
Regards,

Re: External HDD that worked with WNDR3400 is not recognized by R7500
The router has the latest firmware and I did do a reset, but it still gives me no joy. The thumb drive is FAT32. A friend's external HDD talks with it just fine. Could it be that I'm out of luck and the router just happens to be incompatible my drive?
