Re: Feedback for R7000 New firmware 1.0.9.18

I've looked here again after a while and I can't belive the problem is still not solved....

Since I've flashed Tomato a few weeks ago I've forgotten that I have a router- it's working perfectly getting dust because i do not touch it at all :-)...

Parental control works perfectly, 0 drops, strong signal - save your time and do a similar thing!

You should review this and maybe revert back to this recommended version of FW:

Re: Feedback for R7000 New firmware 1.0.9.18

Open wrt and tomato are router firmware written by the public. As such there is no real direct support. They only support specific chipsets.

Open wrt supports more devices and is more stable on a wider variety of devices including those outside netgear. However it's a lot more complicated than Tomato.

Tomato is considered the lightweight easier to use version of open wrt. It is less universally compatible however and you can still hang yourself.

They really aren't for basic computer users. You can't use Netgear genie on them. If you don't understand what the settings are on the webpage router version, tomato is not for you. And I'm not sure what kind of support you will get if you brick your device with tomato (which is a small possibility if you set up the firmware wrong)

Best of luck.

Re: Feedback for R7000 New firmware 1.0.9.18

Hi

I've applied the latest 1.0.9.18 build .chk file via tftpd to revert to normal Netgear build from dd-wrt. However, whenever I browse to 192.168.1.1 the browser redirects me to http://www.routerlogin.net/genie_index.htm which of course doesn't connect as I haven't set the router up with WAN yet.

Can someone please enlighten me as to how I can get to my router settings page so I can change IP address, WiFi passwords etc? Very strange how it tries to go to the internet.

Thanks

Re: Feedback for R7000 New firmware 1.0.9.18

The NG firmware overrides the lookup for www.routerlogin.net and returns the router IP for it. If you are not using the router's DNS server it won't work. Just go directly to http://192.168.1.1, or whatever you have the router at.

Re: Feedback for R7000 New firmware 1.0.9.18

Hmm ok, thanks. I have been going straight to http://192.168.1.1 and it keeps redirecting me back. I'll try setting my DNS manually to that of 192.168.1.1

Thanks

Q: Does Asus know about this project?
A: Yes. We frequently exchange emails, and they have also integrated some of the features and bug fixes from this firmware project into the stock firmware. So far they have been quite supportive of this project, for which I am very grateful.

That is not exactly true when it comes to Asuswrt-merlin hack firmware running on non-ASUS routers. I think eventually ASUS will shut these down.

Re: Feedback for R7000 New firmware 1.0.9.18

Might want to look https://community.netgear.com/t5/Nighthawk-WiFi-Routers/DD-WRT-and-other-third-party-firmware/m-p/44..., message 24... 3rd parties might not have the rights to distribute all code, so either the function would/could be missing, or the entire binary could be considered illegal possibly. Maybe 'someone' is turning a 'blind eye' on it but at some point it might be necessary to remove the firmware (if that is even possible to determine who has it?)?

Re: Feedback for R7000 New firmware 1.0.9.18

They don't need to remove 3rd FW. All they need to do is make future firmware releases not functioning in non-ASUS router. Should not be that hard to check the hardware before starting up. As far as I know, some of ASUS firmware modules are not open source.

Feedback for R7000 New firmware 1.0.9.18

Why are we having this discussion.

If Netgear would fix there firmware , this would academic.

Get after Netgear.

For now all is working with 3rd party firmware could not wait any longer.

people 14 of  them i support were starting to complain.

When and if NetGear get there head out of the ground.

then would entertain going back to there firwware.

Just a thought

Re: Feedback for R7000 New firmware 1.0.9.18

No not been fixed by Netgear.

have moved on to third party firmware.

No  issues.Router has never worked better.

Don't even know its there now, everything works and is stable.

Wireless works, no disconnects, Media streaming doesn't choke any more.

I took the plunge and installed Tomato and no wifi drops. Pretty simple to install. I also run some linux computers and I am now able to print from linux to the network printer.

Re: Feedback for R7000 New firmware 1.0.9.18

Nope, this is not needed in most cases. Nevertheless, you can make an backup of your router settings and set everything back later on new firmware.
