What Router model do you have? RAX? XR?
Be sure your using WPA2 and AES.
Be sure to up date the laptops wifi adapter drivers.

Re: I cannot get my new nighthawk 6 router to connect to my laptop. It says the password fails
Rather than "cannot get my new nighthawk 6 router to connect to my laptop", as you describe in the subject, it is better to think about this the other way round and getting the laptop to connect to the router. Unless you have set it up to block devices, the router doesn't do much in the process beyond providing the wifi.

The same password works with my smartphone
Tell your laptop to forget any connection to the SSID and set it up from scratch. You don't want it remembering old passwords.
And what happens when the laptop tries to connect? Connect how? What says "the password fails"?
