Limiting bandwidth usage by device?

My Father-In-Law uses a program that does live tracking of the tickers of the different stock markets in the world. He is hogging the bandwidth of our network and doesn't care if he does or not. It is a real pain because he won't change his program nor get his own connection.

Is there a method to limit the speed/bandwidth usage by individual system?

Re: Limiting bandwidth usage by device?

why not put a QoS rule in place, for that particular device (use either IP address or MAC address), and give him the priority 'low' ?

That allows him during 'low activity' of others to get full bandwidth, and when others are on the same router / network, it will give priority to other traffic, over his connection.

It seems to be working at my house, where League of Legends and Skype users (i know who they are 🙂 ) have low priority, and my VPN connections to work have higher priority

Re: Limiting bandwidth usage by device?

It depends on your router.

What type of router do you have?
what type of firmware version do you have installed on the router?

Re: Limiting bandwidth usage by device?

You can try to setup the QoS feature of the router. You can put priority(Low,normal, high and highest) to any application and devices connected both wired and wireless. See the link below:

Re: Limiting bandwidth usage by device?

flyboynm,

minions08 is right that option he or she has listed can help with your problem, Also there is another option to limit bandwidth but it implies for the over all frequency you're on. you can adjust the Maximum bandwidth for both frequencies under the wireless option. Across from "mode" you will find options to change the maximum bandwidth for each frequency. Just in case you wanted to slow down that frequency for whatever reasons ;). I copied minions08 link. I think this option is more what you're looking for.

Great Answer! I can't believe this feature doesn't exist on Netgear! I have the same problem and I changed the router. Goodbye Netgear.

Re: Limiting bandwidth usage by device?

Hi EuRoberto,

If you are referring to QoS, NETGEAR has QoS setup to set priority to the device for bandwidth usage.
