I currently have a R7000 and use Readyshare but I don't like having to use the risky Windows 10 SMB1 setting. Is there an improved version?

Don't hold your breath.
Netgear's implementation of SMB support has always been flaky. I see no sign of any upgrades.
Many newer routers don't even support USB,
And it is about to kill off ReadyCLOUD.
For a reliable alternative, look at genuine Ethernet attached storage. It can cost at least twice as much per TB as USB, but that's the price of security.

You can also look for 3rd party firmware support. the r7000 has a ton of aftermarket firmwares.
