Looking for suggestions to buy wifi router with VPN
I want to buy a new router that has VPN built in so I can use any VPN service.
I saw a Netgear router about 15 years ago that was not wifi but had a section in the firmware to enter the VPN server address and the login and password for the VPN server.
It was very easy to enter these settings and change them to a new VPN whenever I wanted.
I see new routers that come with a VPN service built in. I don't think they allow me to change to another VPN service.
I have a WNDR4000 now and they don't have any new firmware that allows me to add a VPN
I am guessing the router has to have special hardware to allow it to use a VPN.
I like Netgear and would like to stick with them.
Any suggestions for a VPN wifi router or even non wifi router that does VPN from any service would be helpful.

Netgears consumer gear tends to be fairly locked down in terms of vpns. Your router supports 3rd party firmware. You could always install that as they tend to be much more compatible with VPN's. MIght be an option for your if you're looking at using multiple vpns.
If you're only looking to support 1 vpn, then look at that specific VPN's site for whats recommended

These days Netgear's VPN support is aimed at accessing your router from the outside world, not for users who want a VPN to disguise their outgoing presence.

I looked at a few sites. Some companies sell the routers and it looks like their routers are locked into only using their Service. They also don't list any of their manuals online, which makes it impossible to know what is in the menus.
I know TP-Link did have VPN Client in their high end devices back in 2005.
I had to setup our office to connect to a government VPN. We had been using Citrix but they upgraded and they required we buy a VPN router to connect to them.
I had purchased this massive Cisco router that was a nightmare to program. I had to use a serial cable and run a terminal and connect and program it.
We changed it out as soon as TP-Link had a router that would do VPN.
I also noticed that the routers that do have VPN Server and VPN Client they don't list it in their manuals.
The only thing I saw that I knew it had it was a photo in the manual showing VPN on the menu, but they never mentioned it.
I saw a bunch of posts from other countries about how serious the government is about arresting people accessing the Internet outside their country.
I have been putting off getting one but I have too many problems with people trying to hack in and it keeps locking up my equipment and knocks everything off the Internet.
I don't know how much difference it will make but I don't have any other ideas. I have a separate hardware firewall device but that doesn't stop people from hammering away from the outside.
I think using a VPN will hide my IP address.
I visited Indian sites this morning tracking down a story about a social security stimulus and it turned out to be a scam from India and the sites all got my IP and the attacks started as soon as I closed my browser.
I would like to stick with Netgear but I don't see anything, even the Nighthawk, they don't have VPN Client, just VPN Server that allows you to set up your home computer as a VPN Server for you to access it from away from home.
The WWRT hacked firmware that works on many routers does support wifi so if I load that I get VPN but lose my Wifi
I guess I will spend the 300 dollars on the router I know works and try it for a few weeks and return it if it doesn't make any difference.
I REALLY wish someone would make a video and the router companies would explain the Server vs Client VPN differences and that you need Client to use a VPN service like NORD.
Not a single video covers this.
And the other thing I am really worried about is the speed.
If they have millions of people connected to their server I bet they are really browsing should be okay but trying to download I bet it will be DSL speed like back in the 90s.
I have hit several times the YouTube message the video is blocked in America. It would be nice to get around that. But the setup in the router you have to select 1 router in 1 country. You can't switch without going in and loading a new server. Their software you can run on each machine allows you to select different servers easier, but I plan to use the closest US server. Hopefully that will be the fastest. I will post my experience with this if I do buy it and set it up.
I have not talked with anyone who actually has the service. I see lots of ads on videos on YouTube but I don't know anyone who really has it or admits they have it.
I think they are worried about it like the people in Russia and China are worried about it. I am shocked that they have not shut them down and almost certainly the governments either runs them or has a direct connection to them, just like the ISPs and all the social media platforms.
I don't expect privacy but I hope it stops the attacks from the outside.
Thankfully I don't have a static IP like I had before when I was still working.
That was a nightmare and the attacks were from stolen accounts at schools and colleges. Giving my ISP the logs was a waste of time. The hardware firewall blocks a lot of non US IP ranges. I highly recommend them.
