NETGEAR PLEASE WAKE UP! R8000 and Internet Speeds

So I upgraded to 1gigabit internet in November 2020 and Cable company sent me their own router.

I gave it a go and it was doing 890-920 speeds wired but the wireless was horrible because we have many smart devices and it just couldnt handle more than 6 wifi devices without becoming a slug.

So I pulled out my old D-Link and WiFi improved but wired speeds dropped to 560 so I hunted for a solution and decided on the Netgear Nighthawk X6 R8000 in late May 2021It came with firmware 1.0.4.28 and my wired speeds jumped to 960 and WiFi was even better than the Dlink.

I was happy but then in June some Rusian IPs kept hammering my IP every 4-6 hours and the router CPU capped and it reboots itself. So I looked for firmware updates and found that 1.0.4.74_10.1.80 was out and reading release notes since .28 it was clear many updates due to security vulnerabilities.

I upgraded as being disconnected from Zoom meetings while being an IT Administrator is embarassing.

I didnt even think to test my speeds right after the firmware (lesson learned)

I qiuckly noticed my download speeds were horrible now, wired I got 280-320 and wifi was in the 200s

I unhooked the router and jackled straight in and wham 980 direct. So I knew it was not Cox and moved on to testing other things, even put the D-Link back and speeds (like Dlink had before was back).

This let me know something was up with my Netgear, since Netgear exchanges are a pain I did an Amazon return and like a fool purchased the same router, I assumed since I got top speeds when I purchased it that the Router model or brand was not the issue.

Replacement comes in, with .28 on it, speeds are back and I was pleased it was a hardware failure... UNTIL I then did the firmware update to .74 and POOF like magic speeds back in the toilet.

Online searches see people downgrading to .28 to get their speeds, so I tried this and sure enough .28 got my speeds back and .46+ kills the speed. Problem is .28 is once again being hammered and router reboots every 4-6 hours and has disconnected me again from Zoom, meetings, my vpn, remote work etc.

So NETGEAR, I need my speeds I pay good money for but I also need SECURITY.

I find it hard to beleive there isnt a way Netgear cant fix the speed, perhaps I missed disabling something.

I did disable dynamic QoS, set NAT to Open instead of secure, turned off everything I can think that would slow packets and same poor 300 range download tests.

is anyone running this router with a firmware over .28 and still getting speeds over 500 when WIRED?

Netgear why do you not care?

Why do I say you dont care, because I never see you replying to your community posts about this when you DAMN WELL know its your fault.

1. The reason they don't respond is this is the community support forum. Where members of the public help out. We're not netgear. We're just people helping.

2. What modem is the r8000 connected to?

3. After the update, did you do a factory reset and new install? Don't use a backup configuration and during the install make sure to leave qos, access control, parental controls, and traffic monitoring all disabled.then try it.

Re: NETGEAR PLEASE WAKE UP! R8000 and Internet Speeds

Can you point to a message from you that went ignored? Or are you just feeling shouty today? Sounds like you have got a lot to get off your chest.

Calm down and start thinking rationally.

You have changed your Internet service.

You dug out an old device that was set up to run on the old Internet service.

The settings for the old service will have been completely different from the new service.

You need to get your old stuff back to its original settings so that you can set up your network all over again.

This isn't a kettle you are using. You can't just unplug a device from one network and slap it into another one.

If you need help with some of your other problems – Russian invaders for example –  reduce the issue to the basics, without all the life history, and someone might be able to help.

So the employees of the company are NOT part of the community, how wonderful they dont feel they are part of the community. Also
when you try going through their support you would have more luck getting McDonalds to sell you a Whopper than for them to admit their

    firmware is flawed.

2. What modem is the r8000 connected to?

    NETGEAR - Nighthawk CM1200 DOCSIS 3.1 Multi-Gig Cable Modem

3. After the update, did you do a factory reset and new install? Don't use a backup configuration and during the install make sure to leave qos, access control, parental controls, and traffic monitoring all disabled.then try it.
Yes, tried that multiple times, multiple ways. I even turned off wifi, PC direct to Modem, 960Mbps, .28 firmware 890Mpbs, .68 firmware 367Mbps, .74 firmware 312Mbps, revert back to .28 888Mbps.

This is with QoS and security features OFF after a factory reset DIRECTLY wired to the router with a SINGLE High end gaming PC only hooked up, even tried with WiFi OFF.

Can you point to a message from you that went ignored? Or are you just feeling shouty today? Sounds like you have got a lot to get off your chest.

I went through official support channels, they wont admit its their firmware, they had me exchange the router, even convinced me it was the Cox modem so I spent a chunk of change on THEIR high end cable modem. Tons of posts about this in this community forums, I pointed that out to support and they could not care any less.

Calm down and start thinking rationally.
Done that for four months, did all the proper channels, testing etc.

You have changed your Internet service.
The Netgear has ONLY been on this internet service, Cable company router was giving me 760Mpbs, Dlink was giving me 790Mbps, wanted more speed, Cox said probably my router couldnt handle it and admited their Panoramic wifi cant, so I picked up this Netgear R8000 to help, WORKED great on .28 and I would leave it there if the port scanning wasnt making it reset every few hours.

You dug out an old device that was set up to run on the old Internet service.

Old Dlink was factory reset the moment I hooked it up, I always factory reset when changing providers

The settings for the old service will have been completely different from the new service.
I dont know how to respond to this without sound like a smart ass because the statment is laughable.

You need to get your old stuff back to its original settings so that you can set up your network all over again.

Been there done that times 12

This isn't a kettle you are using. You can't just unplug a device from one network and slap it into another one.

and I cant use a router to skin a fish either, thanks

If you need help with some of your other problems – Russian invaders for example –  reduce the issue to the basics, without all the life history, and someone might be able to help.

OK simple as it gets:

  • Issue, .28 firmware gives me full speed but is rebooting due to port scanning
  • .68/.74 firmware is cutting my internet speed by 2/3rds but not rebooting
