Netgear R6850 forcing Netgear acct?

I have had a Netgear R6850 for a little over a year. During intial install I skipped using whatever 'app' it was the manual wanted me to install. Connected directly via lan, set my radio & wifi settings went through everything and it worked quite well. About six months after I signed in to toggle uPNP. My trusty netgear was now showing 185 days of uptime. I was very pleased with it-this router has basically been trouble free.

Unfortunately, the router had to be reset last night after the 5GHZ network appeared to stop broadcasting. Came right back on reset though. I notice now when trying to access the routers settings it asks me for my user/pass, then seems to want me to create a NETGEAR Account. I do not want this-it's why I didn't install or use the genie app. Actually, other than firmware updates..I'd prefer the router have no contact with Netgear.

This really bothers me. Obviously I had to create an account just to make this post. I will factory reset the router and load DD-WRT on it before I link my router to any netgear account not stored locally.

I understand you want your telemetry/user stats/emails to resell..that's fine. Give the rest of us a clear cut option to turn this crap off, though. I paid for this router. It wasn't subsidized. I own it. Merely a suggestion 🙂

Thank you!

I

Is this seen on the routers web page setup wizard or on the Nighhawk app? The NH app would ask for a NG user account. The setup wizard on the routers web page using a web browser should proceed with out asking for a NG profile account log in.

I've been seeing the user name/password issue more.

I think the reason is netgear is requiring users to meet the minimum requirements on the password.

It might have updated at some point and yours didn't meet the requirements.

Did you change the password?

Access how?

The best way in us with the browser graphical user interface (GUI) and a wired connection.

You can then skip the steps where the router tries to be "helpful". These things are designed for novices who need hand holding. But you can usually kick the "wizard" into touch. Just look carefully at the screens you see.

Ya I have noticed that 10 characters is minimum requirement know days. Upper case and a numerical character is needed as well.

Re: Netgear R6850 forcing Netgear acct?

I apologize-I should've been cleared. I connected directly to the router (WiFi) by using a browser and navigating to its IP address (10.0.01)

It does the usual-prompt for user/pass. Then it loads some SSO script, checks for an internet connection & asks for a netgear account. I can take screenshot if neccessary.

But in short no I'm using a browser. No..I haven't-the administrator password? It's not the default but it's very simple. I'll look into that-thanks.

That would still require some communication from my router to netgear tho.

Re: Netgear R6850 forcing Netgear acct?

I bet its the router registration script that wants to have a NG profile to sign into and get the router registered to your NG profile. I see this happen as well after I setup a new router. After the setup wizard passes the check for FW updates, the next screen re-directs to the registration page and if you had a browser signed in to a NG profile, the script will add the router registration information to the NG profile for you.

How did you end up with that IP address?

It is often a sign that something else on the network has squaetted on the default address: 192.168.1.1

Always helps to deal with the obvious before going down a rabbit hole.

I wonder if the exotic explanations here – some of which don't relate to my "techno dim" experience – have missed one of the usual boilerplate questions.

It might help if you told people what modem sits in front of your router, if there is one. The model number could be useful. Is it, by any chance, also a router, with a set of LAN ports on the back?

The reason for asking is that a lot of people turn up here trying to put a router behind a modem that is also a router. That can complicate troubleshooting.

It is also one reason why you end up with that IP address.

When you set it up, all that time ago, the process may have spotted something else on the network and adapted itself accordingly. The reset may have undone its good work.
