Netgear r6700v3 Restarting frequently + a potential fix.
TLDR if you're having issues with your router restating and you've already tried every suggestion you've seen online, try getting a new 12 volt AC adapter rated for the same or preferably more amps than your original adapter.
Hi how's it going. I got a free Nighthawk R6700v3 router from my work a couple months ago since it had been having issues randomly restarting and interrupting business so we upgraded to like an actual business router and stuff. I took it home and kept having the same issues with the whole router restarting frequently and after updating it to the latest firmware (V1.0.4.128_10.0.104) and ensuring no "auto restart" features were enabled, I figured the router was probably overheating and thermally shutting down. Considering my job is literally fixing electronics, I decided to open it up and try upgrading the thermal pads, added a heatsink to the top side of the board, and added a fan attached to the 5V pin of the serial port inside. That didn't fix it, and I kinda just dealt with it for a couple months. About a week ago, I decided to solder the fan power directly to the 12V DC in jack to let it run at full speed. The problem kept occurring BUT I noticed that whenever the router would restart the fan would stop for a second too. If it was an issue with the router itself that wouldn't happen, since with the fan soldered directly to the DC input it would keep spinning as long as the AC adapter is plugged in whether or not the router is on. Last night I decided to try unplugging the AC adapter and run the router off my lab power supply, and about 18 hours later I haven't seen it restart once. I'll update this thread if I do end up having the issue again, but considering it used to restart every couple hours and now has gone most of a day without powering off I think it's safe to assume that's what was causing it.
