Nighthawk R7960P-NAS100 slow start-up

Since I first purchased and installed my R7960P-NAS100 Nighthawk X65 ac3600, (about 3 months ago) I’ve encountered a delay in my internet every time I wake my system up from sleep state. It can take between 5-10 minutes before I begin receiving internet activity. Wi-Fi is also affected during this time frame. Here is my current set up:

My modem is a netgear N600 wi-fi cable modem. I’ve disabled Wi-Fi so it would not interfere with the signal from the nighthawk Wi-Fi router. From there I run CAT7 to my Wi-Fi router, then back to my PC.

Troubleshooting steps taken: contacted ISP provider and no issue was found from their end. Swapped from aggregate port to non-aggregate port. Also, dynamic QoS is by default, disabled. Current firmware is V1.4.1.44_1.3.5. What is causing this delay because I did not have this issue before; I could just wake my system up and go online right away. The only change made was setting up this wifi router, which is when this slow start-up began and continues. It is still under warrenty so tech support is my next option.

Re: Nighthawk R7960P-NAS100 slow start-up

so you're running a N600 cable modem/router combo device (model #?) and the R7960P?

Are they both in router mode?

I get you turned off wifi and the N600 but if you didn't put it in modem mode, you're running in a double nat. That can cause some slow downs.

"wi-fi" implies modem+router, not simply "modem".  What's its actual
model number?  C3700?  C3700v2?  Other?  Look at the product label.

That's not enough to stop it from being a router, and you don't want
two routers.

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your (actual) model number,
and look for Documentation.  Get the User Manual.  Read.  Look for
some topic like "Change the Router Mode".  Selecting "Router Mode: No"
should make it a modem-only.

Giving you two cascaded routers, not one router, which might cause a
problem like this.

When I changed C3700 setting to modem-only, I was not able to log back into the modem to revrt the settings so I figured I had "broke" my router and had to do a facotry reset. If this is suppose to happen, then I'll continue forward. It will be a couple of days to determine if issue persists. I'll reply then.

Thanks for the assist.

   That sounds like a C3700[v1].

"not able" is not a useful problem description.  It does not say what
you did. It does not say what happened when you did it.  As usual,
showing actual actions (commands) with their actual results (error
messages, LED indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague
descriptions or interpretations.

I lack experience with cable-TV stuff, so I know nothing, but, with
the modem+router router disabled, I'd expect "routerlogin.XXX" names (a
router feature) to fail, along with the usual modem+router IP address,
"192.168.0.1".  However, I'd expect the usual DOCSIS (modem) access
address, "192.168.100.1" to work.  Otherwise, you might need a settings
reset to restore access to the C3700 management web site.

Re: Nighthawk R7960P-NAS100 slow start-up

To add detail "not able" to access modem, I use the netgear desktop app, net genie, to access the C3700 network settings. Another way was typing in the IP address into the address bar to access the modem. Once I disabled router mode to "off", to enable modem mode, access to the modem was no longer available and a different IP is now listed on the netgear genie app, not in the form of "192.168.100.1". LED's are still working, no change there and I still have internet access, I just cannot access the modem through the netgear genie desktop app. I've connected my router and things continue working as normal. Devices connect etc. But like you mentioed, "...you might need a settings reset to restore access to the C3700 management web site." If that's normal, then I'll anotate it on my notes for the modem and reset it to factory settings if I need to revert it back to utilize Wi-Fi.

Aside from that, I'm away from home so I'll follow up on whether my internet is still loading up slowly. Thanks again.

Which "the netgear desktop app"?  I try to avoid as much Netgear
software as I can, so I stick to a web browser for managing this stuff.

That's which "the IP address" into "the address bar" of some web
browser or other, running on some computer/device or other, connected by
wire or wireless, to some wireless router or other?

> [...] Once I disabled router mode to "off", to enable modem mode,

Direct wireless access to it would disappear, certainly.

> [...] and a different IP is now listed on the netgear genie app, not
> in the form of "192.168.100.1".

Knowing the one address (out of billions) which it's _not_ is much
less useful than knowing the one address which it _is_.  Not being an
app user, I know nothing, but I would expect any app to deal with a
router or modem+router; I would not expect it to tunnel through a router
to get to a modem.  But what do I know?

> [...] I just cannot access the modem through the netgear genie desktop
> app. [...]

Try a web browser (on a computer which is connected to your R7960P)
aimed at "192.168.100.1"?  I'd expect that to work.

> [...] But like you mentioed, "...you might need a settings reset [...]

> Otherwise, you might need a settings reset [...]

   The "Otherwise" was important there.

> [...] If that's normal, then I'll anotate it on my notes for the modem

A settings reset is pretty sure-fire, but can be inconvenient.  It's
especially unhelpful if you want to get some line-quality statistics or
other data from the modem itself, which will all evaporate when you
wipe its puny brain.  (But the fact that you keep notes at all is
refreshing around here.)

> [...] I'll follow up on whether my internet is still loading up

That would be interesting.  Cascading NAT routers is usually a bad
idea, unless you have some good reason to do it, and you understand the
potential problems, but, so far, the "cascaded routers" hypothesis, as a
cause for your original complaint, is still just that.

Re: Nighthawk R7960P-NAS100 slow start-up

After several mornings and evening boot-ups from sleep mode, my internet is working properly each boot-up. Switching router mode off on the modem/wifi combo resolved the issue. I appriciate the replies and helpfulness.
