Nighthawk X10 AD7200 Model R9000 will not factory reset

I have the Nighthawk X10 AD7200 Smart WiFi Router Model R9000. When I hold down the reset button, it does not reset.

1. I can confirm the lights change on the router when I hold in the reset button.

2. I have tried holding in the reset button (it makes an audible click) for 30 secs, unplugged the power (still holding reset) for 30 secs, replugged in the power (still holding reset) for 30 secs. All lights resume. It still isn't reset. I have done this after just holding for 30 secs with power plugged in and turned on also failed.

3. I can confirm it isn't reset because all my wifi signals re-appear just as they were before. Cool, I still have internet.

4. When I go to the http://www.routerlogin.net/ and/or 192.168.1.1 I do still get prompted for credentials.

4a. admin / password don't work

4b. what I literally wrote down was the credentials don't work

4c. I can't use the secret questions because it says my answers are wrong. I have tried all upper case, all lower case, regular casing. It is telling me my answers are wrong when I am not crafty enough to even possibly think of purposefully wrong answers.

5. I have reviewed the router manual for information on factory resetting (page 161): http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/R9000/R9000_UM_EN.pdf

6. I have not recently updated my firmware manually. I do not know if the router is set to do it automatically. I can't check because I can't access the GUI.

7. I actually thought it might be firmware, so I downloaded the firmware (from http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/R9000/R9000-V1.0.5.12_beta.zip) and followed a post for a user with a slightly different router than I had, to no avail. https://community.netgear.com/t5/Nighthawk-WiFi-Routers/R7000-Nighthawk-Won-t-factory-reset/m-p/1495...

TL;DR

My router won't reset. I have internet. But I can't go into my GUI to make any changes at all to my router settings.

Re: Nighthawk X10 AD7200 Model R9000 will not factory reset

I ended up leaving my modem and router disconnected from power for 24 hours. Then when I powered them both on (they're on the same power supply), I held the router's reset button for 30 seconds. Inexplicably, this did the reset. Why, I don't know. Because the DHCP should have been relased regardless and have nothing to do with the router's actual settings. I don't know, I just work here.

What firmware version do you have on the device?

A number is more useful than "the latest". (It may not be by the time people read this.) There can also be newer versions, or "hot fixes", that do not show up if you check for new firmware in the browser interface.

It might also help if you told people what the modem is in front of this router. The model number could be useful. Is it, by any chance, also a router, with a set of LAN ports on the back?

What does that mean? Same SSIDs?

There is a bug in Netgear's implementation of password recovery on some devices. You can get locked into a closed loop.

If password recovery is enabled, but you have not set the answers to the questions, it keeps sending you back to the beginning of the process. If you haven't already given the thing your personal answers, they are not in its memory and it has not way of knowing if they are correct.

If the standard factory password (password) does not work, then you will have to factory reset the thing to get back to that. Then either disable password recovery (check the manual for your device) or provide some answers to those questions.

Re: Nighthawk X10 AD7200 Model R9000 will not factory reset

1. How can I locate the firmware version of the router without being able to log into the UI?

2. I have a cable modem, not a router. It has one ethernet port, one ethernet cord, going from modem to router. I will have to get a model number for you later. I cannot access it right now.

3. The same SSIDs and Wifi passwords reappear after holding in the reset button. I can utilize the Wifi without changing anything on any of my Wifi devices who have cached/saved credentials for said Wifi.

4. Do you know the confirmed bug number and/or informational page from Netgear that acknowledges this known issue with credentials recovery? Could you link me to the page so I may read more on this? I definitely DID set secret questions upon initial set up, it just refused any and all combinations of answers.

5. That leads me back to my initial issue of "I cannot perform a factory reset on this router." I cannot revert back to the default UI username and password, I cannot clear the secret questions/answers, because I cannot get this thing to actually reset.

Re: Nighthawk X10 AD7200 Model R9000 will not factory reset

That's great when you are like, "I just left it off and came back and now it works." and the forum is like "Solved!!!"

I know it's a couple weeks late but here a little additional info:

1. These routers are trash, the firmware is trash, it won't be the last time you have a problem.

2. Last year a firmware update that was pushed out bricked a good number of these routers and there's still an underlying hardware/firmware problem that is not resolved.

3. With respect to number 2, this router is susceptible to having its nvram corrupted, and it basically loses all of it's configuration settings, and other similar problems, very much like the problems you have described.

4. The last advice I can give is that had you not resolved the issues, I would have recommended a 30-30-30 reset, that will clear the nvram completely and allow you to 'attempt' to get it back on track. You can google 30-30-30 reset of my quick explaination is that you have to hold the reset button on the back of the router for 30 seconds, keep the reset held and unplug the router for 30 seconds, while reset still held plug the router back in and keep that reset helf for 30 more seconds, so you holding reset 30secs, unplug router 30secs, plug back in 30secs, then after minimum of 90sec you can let go of the reset button and it should factory reset and completely clear the nvRAM and allow you to clear out any ram corruption.

My X10 R9000 is somewhere in a shop in Asia, maybe as a door stop or other inatimate object but, this one i'm using that NetGear charged me $16.50 to replace mine as the solution to the problem they created, well it's not working properly either so, I've abandoned NetGear firmware because it doesn't work and I'm using DD-WRT, since this router has no warranty anyway, and so far, it's seems to be 'working'. I have no idea what to consider for my next wi-fi router but I know the only feature I have in mind now is that the words "NetGear" will not appear on it anywhere.
