Nighthawk X6 Tri-Band WiFi Router R8000 + 3 additional EX8000 – AC3000 Nighthawk X6S Mesh exted

Hi all,

So, I had an apple network set-up in my house but it was aging and so I thought i would upgrade it.

My issues within our house are;

  1. I have a bungalow so its widespread.
  2. The walls are made of multiple layers of dense plasterboard for soundproofing / fire reasons so they don’t allow the travel of signal as easily as your standard wall might, as well as blockwork and metal stud partitions in areas.
  3. I have a wireless doorbell that is 10m away from our house.
  4. We now have a garden room that is built in metal so is like a signal shield.

So with the above in mind, I’m looking for a system that;

  1. allows handover of information such as calls while using WiFi calling (we have extremely limited phone signal so have to use this).
  2. Can utilise a wired connection rather than just relying on WiFi for backhaul (I'm not expert so please correct me if my assumption is wrong here).
  3. Allows me to add a VPN to the system (we have baby monitors etc that concerningly have been 'playing up' and looking into it has scared us a bit) so we have a secure system.

What has highlighted this is that I try and work from home but I do tend to walk a lot when I'm on a call and when i move from one connection to another it isn’t seamless and either i loose the call or its interrupted for a notable amount of time and the same going for general feeds over the internet etc.

I'm not sure if the systems I have is capable of providing what I need, which I believe is a 'mesh' system, I looked at the Orbi system but my thought were that if signal transfer is hindered in my property then using a tri band system to backhaul data is just transferring data through a compromised method rather than using already wired points (I wired cat5e and cat 7 to every room when we renovated), but I think (again maybe incorrectly here) that an AP is great as a standalone unit bit it doesn’t 'handover' data which would describe my issues?

Ideally I would like to use the equipment I have bought, I have 1x Nighthawk X6 Tri-Band WiFi Router R8000 and 3 x EX8000 – AC3000 Nighthawk X6S Mesh extenders.

If i need an Orbi system I can sell my existing parts and buy that but I didn’t want to spend the money (fairly significant) if I was then going to experience problems trying to backhaul data with WiFi and we have wires throughout that we could utilise. If we used the wires the garden office would be fixed as the wifi would be perfect inside and as you exit that would be handed over the to house routers (the garden room is close) and generally use in the house would have the main router and 2 extenders, one at the edge of the house to extend to the doorbell and that side of the house, one at the other side which is the main area (living and kitchen) and then the router almost triangulated but close to the centre of the house in the hub room for any other area (basically the hub room is near 2 bedrooms but is quite central but isn’t strong enough to deliver good performance throughout.

Our house isn't impenetrable by any stretch but I think it does make it harder to get good performance which is what makes me question using WiFi signals to backhaul being the best way?

Any help and advice would be great appreciated as i'm pulling my hair out.

Thanks in advance.

Rob

    What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
    30 feet or more is recommended in between router and extender📡 to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected.

      Hi FURRye38,

      Thank you for the quick reply, it's roughly 15m x 18m so 270m2 or 2900ft2.

      There is roughly 35ft between the router and the 2 extenders in the house and maybe 45ft to the metal garden office.

      Thanks,

        What I'd try doing?

        connect the 2x EX8000's in the home with them setup in extender mode and not hardwired in. (with the "onewifi" feature enabled)  In extender mode, it still uses the smart roaming protocol so devices should work fairly well.You can also setup the EX8000's for different backhauls on the r8000. Meaning you could have one connected to the high band and the other to the lower band channels (might take some playing around with to get working like that).

        You're garden one is the challenge. When the EX8000 is hardwired in, its ran in access point mode. Access point mode disables the roaming protocols. But most newer devices have their own smart roaming protocols built into them. So when you leave the garden shed, its structure could cause the device to automatically roam because of the decreased signal. So potentially you can have it with the same ssid as the house and potentially roam. It isn't as seamless as using a system like orbi or the MK nighthawk that supports both wired and wireless backhaul but it might work.
