Parental Controls removed on R7800 with the latest update to V1.0.2.82

Hello everyone,

It looks like wiht the latest update of firmware to  V1.0.2.82, parental controls functionality was removed from this router.  Was it moved somewhere else, I can't seem  to find it and it is gone from the menus when I connect to the router at  http://www.routerlogin.net/index.htm I no longer see the Parental Controls square and the  Netgear Genie that worked fine early this week now states: "Your router's current firmware does not support Parental Controls..." and continues with go to netgear.com annd update to the latest firmware.  Well, the issue is with the latest firmware.

Was it done deliberatelly and if so what is the replacement and if not , if this is a bug, any idea on the fix?

Thanks all,

- Andrew

Well,  I found my answer and have to say it is  bunch of  b... on part of Netgear.

"Live Parental Control service based on OpenDNS will no longer be supported on NETGEAR devices as of December 31, 2021 due to challenges in maintaining the product and low usage. Effective April 1st, 2021 NETGEAR will remove support for Live Parental Controls from the NETEGAR genie app and from updated versions of their firmware.

Customers can continue to use OpenDNS for content and security filtering by directly setting up an account at
https://www.opendns.com/home-internet-security/"

I bought this roter because of Parental Controls 😞  How about I get a refund for it since it is no longer doing what I bought it for.   Just killed it like  that.  Great work guys, nice customer support 😞

Yup. Free parental controls are on their way out.

Netgear has announced that it is killing the free Live Parental Controls. So don't get to rely on it.

NOTICE: Live Parental Control Service based on Ope... - NETGEAR Communities

Netgear is gradually removing free services and pushing people over to the subscription modem that is increasingly the industry norm. (Does anyone still do that stuff for free?)

When did you buy the R7800?

Unless it was recently you may be out of luck on the refund front. I can't recall Netgear ever promising that these free services would be there in perpetuity when I got mine, three or four years ago.

Thanks  michaelkenward,

Understood and I don't expect any refund, but I did not consider these as free/extra features, this was advertised as part of the product.  In fact, "Enhanced Parental Controls allow you to manage Internet access by profiles or devices" is still on the site at https://www.netgear.com/home/wifi/routers/r7800/ 😞

Joined up thinking is not one of Netgear's strong points.

I have a solution for you. Flash Voxel firmware for the R7800 much better then stock with many patches and up to date packages such as openssl and many many more.  You can find Voxel on Small net builders forums. Just search R7800-Voxel.
