Port Speeds on R8500 with No Aggregation.

If  NOT binding the 2 ports.. keeping -6- seperate ports...

what are the  Fastest Ports.

What's the port speeds for each port ?

I see on the Port Aggregation page it states

when using Aggregated port 1 & 2.. " For Fastest Speed use port 3 for the first computer"

..

SO.. that tells me that Netgear is TELLING US.. that port 4, 5, & 6 are slower.

..

So..  How fast are ports 1 & 2 ... port 3..  and port 4, 5, & 6  ??

Re: Port Speeds on R8500 with No Aggregation.

It has been verified that ports 1,2, & 3 can handle up to 1Gbps.

While ports 4,5 & 6 are shared and it's up to 1Gbps.

In terms of linkspeed, ports 4,5 & 6 will show 1Gbps on your computer. However, when it comes to throughput, it will be divided on the number of devices attached on those 3 ports.

On your Mac, make sure that the adapter is set to 1Gbps Full Duplex

Re: Port Speeds on R8500 with No Aggregation.

They are all 10/100/1000 Mbps ports. Manual  Page 11.

Excerpt from the manual.

"The router has six Ethernet ports. Ports 1 and 2 can be used as Ethernet LAN ports or as aggregation ports to connect to a NAS or Smart Switch that supports port aggregation (LACP)".

Re: Port Speeds on R8500 with No Aggregation.

The LED colors only works when the ethernet cable is plugged in and internet connections are active.

I'm wanting to know what the  PORT HARDWARE max designated speeds are.

Example.. a copy paste from the manual :

..... To get the fastest performance with port aggregation, for wired connections use Ethenetport 3 for the first computer, ..... and use Ethernet port 4, 5 or 6 for the second computer, whichallows for speeds up to 2 Gbps with port aggregation. ...... The maximum speed between port 4, 5 and 6 is limited to 1 Gbps.

SO.. what this tells us..
A. Port 1 & 2 are the agg ports
B.  3, 4, 5, & 6  are normal ports
C.  Port 3 has a different max speed than 4, 5, & 6
D.   All ports are NOT created equal.

SO..   What are the max port speeds for  1 through 6 when  1&2 are not binded.
Basically..  Someone typed in the manual that 3 is different.  I want to know the difference and I'm HOPING
port 1,2, & 3 have some magical powers created with them to access greater speeds, bandwidth, Push Throughs.
..  Then I'll prioritize my devices according to each ports ability.

I read the entire manual.. and Specs, & what I could find on the netgear site..
but I'm certain  I missed something..  since someone indicated 3 is special.

Re: Port Speeds on R8500 with No Aggregation.

@ElaineM can we get some clarification on this paragraph please? You may wnat to read all the threads. Thank You! We know ports 1 and 2 support LAG, just not sure where this paragraph is going. It's not very well written.

I mentoined above all ports are 10/100/1000 Mbps ports.

Re: Port Speeds on R8500 with No Aggregation.

That sortta made my brain hurt.

I googled a few terms off the link.. such as "BCM4709".. and my eyes got crossed.

But after getting my eyes straight.. I did see that  - ONE - of those dang 6 ports can

at least reach 950 Mbps ! ! !

..

Maybe  ElaineM can just simply tell us / ME

what the Un-Aggregated/ Not Binded MAX speed

of ports  1, 2, 3...  ( I guess we already know that 4, 5, 6 = 1Gbps /3)

..

I got my R8500 in today and hooked my

MacBookPro to port 1

Desktop to Port 2

External HD  Port 3  (10+  yr old exteranl with 2 OLDER HD's,  I  so need a newer smarter external)

Switch to Port 4  ( printer, Roku1,  Hopper SuperJoey, Hopper Joey, & Bose)

Roku2  to port 5

 - -  ? -  Port 6  ..  I have another Cat6 cable ordered that I'll probably hook up to

my Roku2,  or Printer ( not sure if I'll benifit from giving the printer it's own port since it uses such small data)

Re: Port Speeds on R8500 with No Aggregation.

I had my MacbookPro in port1,  Desktop port2, External HD port3

Looking on the Statistics page it gave my MacbookPro 100mb

Desktop 1000 & External 1000..

I thought..  Maybe port 2 & 3 are  1000mb (1g)

so I moved my Macbookpro to port2...

it hanged port 2  to 100..
SOOOOO it's tagged the devices a speed.. and port 1,2,3 can get to 1Gig

( I didn't check port 4-6)

Note:  my MacbookPro ethernet port is a Gigabit port

and my ISP download tested 174MB/ 5up

I have my Mac priority listed as Highest..

-- so I wonder how I can increase the routers port speed

......  and I wonder why the HECK it listed my 10+ yr old

external HD as 1,000  and not my newer Mac gigabite port.
