R6220 Internet slow, says firmware out of date, directs to routerlogin.net, which says it cant updat
I tried to be pretty thorough in the subject line. Basically, I've been having internet speed issues. I'm supposed to be getting 400 mbps and I'm getting 30-40 at best. I just bought a new modem ...

The SB6190 is much better than the SB6141.
It should be able to hit full speeds but you're not going to hit them over wireless. Thats why we have people test wired.
maybe you can borrow a laptop/pc or buy a usb--ethernet converter. That'd tell you the speed you're actually getting at the modem and the router.
The R6220 is a base model AC device with only a 2x2 antenna setup. its not going to set any speed records and I highly doubt you'll hit 400mbps over 5ghz on it. Maybe closer to the 200mbps that you're close to hitting.
Not giving it any grief as most devices don't need faster speeds than 200mbps. for example, streaming 4k video only needs 20-40mbps.
so if your phone/tablet/streamer is hitting those speeds, its not going to be the bottleneck.

First thank yaou, I realized I was not testing on the 5G connection. I checked that connection and I re-tested and I got it all the way up to 136 mbps
(1) New gateway/modem I got yesterday was Arris Surfboard SB6190 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem
Previously I had been using Arris Surfboard SB6141. The old one said speeds up to 343 mbps, the new one says up to 1.4 gbps
I guess now my question is, should I go back to the old modem? Comcast activated service on my new modem yesterday and I really don't want to call them back again. 136 mbps is not 400 but its better than 50. still not close to 343!
(2) can't connect directly (no device with ethernet port)
(3) see above.
(4) now over 5 ghz
(5) info came from agent on comcast tech support.
(6) been testing on my chromebook and my phone.
just tested again on chromebook and got all the way up to 160 mbps. It was 55 mbps over the phone.
do you think I do actually need to use this new modem?

If you have replaced the modem in front of a router, then you should reset the router and set it up from scratch so that it forgets any past liaisons with the old modem.
It is also important to reboot everything in the right order.
Be sure to restart your network in this sequence:
- Turn off and unplug modem.
- Turn off router and computers.
- Plug in and turn on modem. Wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
- Turn on the router and wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
- Turn on computers and rest of network.
Think of it as setting up a new system.
As plemans says, the R6220 is far from "high end", more likely bottom of the range, but fine for many purposes.
