R7000 Bridge mode not assigning IP after restart
Hello, I replaced my trusty old r7000 router with a newer Asus RT-AX59U a few days ago and I was having issues with my Asus wifi card in my PC not getting satisfactory wifi speeds, so I removed it and set up my old r7000 as a wireless bridge. It is connected and seems to work great; I have given it and my desktop static IPs on the Asus router and when it works, it works.
My problem arises when my desktop is shut down for an extended period of time. I am no expert when it comes to home networking but it seems like the r7000, even though I've not turned it off, disconnects from the main router if it (ie the r7000) has no clients. This means that, at the moment at least, I also have to restart the bridge to get it to retrieve an IP to my desktop. This morning I checked my Asus router and the bridge was no longer connected, even though I assumed it would remain so, but on restart of the bridge everything resumed working as normal.
I can't see any power saving features on the r7000 (FW V1.0.11.216_10.2.122) that would explain it disconnecting or dropping signal (no issues with signal strength). I tried "ipconfig /release" but windows basically complained that it couldn't do anything without a working ethernet connection.
Is there a setting I'm missing, even if it might be on the Asus router, or is this expected behaviour in some way? Does the bridge drop connection after a few hours if nothing is connected to it?
Thanks in advance!

If you removed the Asus what device are you using as a router?
What is at the other end of the R7000 bridge?

I'd be surprised if the R7000 could do better than a more modern router. The Netgear device was first released in 2007. There have been several generations of WiFi technology since then.
- BabyLamb89AspirantInitially, with disappointing speeds I had: internet -> Asus Router -wifi- Asus pci wifi card in PC.
Changed to: internet -> Asus Router -wifi- r7000 as bridge ->ethernet to PC (no network card).
The r7000 is set to receive IPs from the Asus router.
Windows is shut down when the r7000 seems to disconnect so while I agree that windows is very aggressive with its power saving, I'm not sure that is doing anything in this case.
Should the r7000 be obtaining and assigning an IP to my desktop as soon as it detects activity on the connected ethernet cable?

WiFi can never match wired.
It would be odd if the R7000 improves WiFi speeds.
I would put some effort into troubleshooting the Asus WiFi connection.
Just another user with time on their hands.
